New and old name of the S-Bahn station with historical pictures (2019)

The Brandenburger Tor station (from 1936 to 2009: Unter den Linden ) is a tunnel station of the Berlin S-Bahn and is located near the Brandenburg Gate . With the opening of the underground line 55 on August 8, 2009, a transfer station to the underground was opened and the S-Bahn station was renamed the Brandenburg Gate .

S-Bahn station

Historical station name in the wall tiles from 1936

The S-Bahn station was opened on July 27, 1936 as the provisional terminus of the north-south tunnel as Unter den Linden station, scheduled traffic began the following day, and the line continued towards Potsdamer Platz three years later. Another reason was that on August 20, 1935, during construction, the building walls collapsed to 50 meters and 19 workers buried.

The station, operationally a stop , is located one and a half times below the southern lane of the Unter den Linden boulevard and has a central platform . The tiles are lime green as a reference to the street name Unter den Linden . The space under the northern carriageway was already kept free during the planning for an urban express train line. There is a pedestrian tunnel at both ends above the platform hall with entrances on the sidewalks on the north and south sides. Due to the function as a temporary end point of the route, a switch connection between the track tracks was set up on the west side of the platform. The main track Anhalter Bahnhof – Gesundbrunnen served as a provisional sweeping track. The electromechanical signal box Ulu was built for security . The turnout connection was removed when the entire line was commissioned. As an emergency turn , it was later set up again after reconstruction, but in the opposite direction.

Due to the effects of the war , traffic was stopped on April 21, 1945. Operations could not be resumed until December 2, 1947, as a few days after the closure the tunnel ceiling below the Landwehr Canal was blown up and the tunnel flooded - some of the water also flowed into the Berlin underground network . Two years after the reopening, however, it was closed again, this time for renovation purposes in order to repair the last flood damage from 1945.

With the construction of the embassy building of the USSR , the south-eastern entrance, which is directly in front of the building, was closed at their request.

Between August 13, 1961 and September 1, 1990, no trains stopped at the platform, as this, like the entire north-south S-Bahn tunnel , was assigned to the western sub-network. In contrast to the other stops on the north-south S-Bahn, the entrances were filled in, covered with paving slabs and thus removed almost without a trace. The north-western entrance was kept accessible and camouflaged with an aluminum post house. In order to reopen the access point, the entrances on the north side were uncovered by September 1, 1990, the south-western access four weeks later. The entrance in front of the now Russian embassy remained closed until 1998.

Since the opening of the U55 underground line on August 8, 2009, the station has been named Brandenburger Tor like the neighboring underground station , as the continuation of the underground line already has a new station at Unter den Linden so that confusion should be avoided. In the beginning, the old name could still be read on the walls and the platform buildings for monument protection reasons ; In mid-December 2009 it was covered with signs with the new name on the tunnel walls.

Since August 2016, train handling has been carried out by the driver using the driver's cab monitor (ZAT-FM).

Subway station

Brandenburger Tor underground platform

The underground station on the U55 line was originally supposed to open for the 2006 World Cup . However, problems with the groundwater delayed construction several times, so that the opening could only take place on August 8, 2009. The line to Alexanderplatz is to be continued by 2020 and combined with the existing U5 line , so that there will also be a continuous underground connection between the main station and Hönow on the eastern edge of the city.

Among other things, historical quotes about the access stairs of the underground station remind of the division of Berlin

For a long time, the design of the station was unclear due to the tight financial situation in the state of Berlin. Ultimately, the station was included in the capital's memorial concept: the division of Berlin is remembered in and around the station, and passengers are informed by an information center and various large maps. The Oestreich / Hentschel office designed the station itself in an anthracite color and illuminated it with particularly bright ceiling lights. The platform with a double row of supports is 110 meters long and has an elevator at the western end.

Since the subway station was completed, moisture has penetrated the structure in several places. During the necessary renovation work, the station will probably have to be closed in 2018.

There is currently only a direct transition between the S-Bahn and U-Bahn platforms (without a detour via the street) on the west side. On the east side, a connection to the access tunnel of the S-Bahn platform is currently being built as part of the U5 extension.

Connection

The station is served by lines S1, S2, S25 and S26 of the S-Bahn and line U55 of the underground. It is possible to change to the bus lines 100 and TXL of the BVG .
