The subway station Unter den Linden is an under construction metro -Umsteigebahnhof in Berlin district of Mitte . It is being built as part of the extension of the U5 line from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate , the construction of which began in 2010 ( groundbreaking ). The station is at the intersection with the existing U6 line and is scheduled to open on December 4, 2020.

It is not identical to the Brandenburger Tor S-Bahn and U-Bahn station , which was called Unter den Linden until 2009 .

planning

The crossing station , like the Brandenburger Tor underground station , was designed by the Berlin office of Hentschel / Oestreich .

A T-shaped crossing station will be built with the existing U6 subway line at the intersection of the Unter den Linden boulevard and Friedrichstrasse ; in the east it will reach Charlottenstrasse . The U5 line will have a central platform 14 meters below the top of the street, while the U6 line will have two side platforms at a depth of around five meters. In between there is a distribution level under the southern half of the intersection. From here, entrances to the central promenade on Unter den Linden will be created on both sides of Friedrichstrasse. Another access is planned at the eastern end of the U5 platform, also in the central promenade to Charlottenstrasse. Furthermore, the side platforms of the U6 will each be given access at the southern end between Rosmarinstrasse and Behrenstrasse . The platforms of the U5 and U6 will be connected with escalators and two elevators leading to the surface.

The station is built using a top-down construction . First the existing tunnel of the U6 had to be dismantled in this area and the traffic on the U6 between the stations Friedrichstrasse and Französische Strasse had to be interrupted. Then the diaphragm walls , the HDI base and the cover are produced, under whose protection the new station will then be built. First, the station area for the U6 will be built and traffic on this line will resume. The station area for the U5 line will only be built after the tunnel boring machine has passed and the two line tunnels for the U5 have been built.

All systems for operational equipment, such as power supply, telecommunications systems and air conditioning, as well as a rectifier to supply the trains with traction current, are installed in the underground station building.

From the end of 2010 to the beginning of 2012, extensive line relocations were carried out in the later construction site area.

The first batch for the production of the shell was awarded by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) at the end of January 2012. It includes the launch shaft for the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel in the shield drive area , the Unter den Linden and Museum Island stations and a track changing system. The order volume is around 190 million euros. For the shell of the Unter den Linden station, 84 million euros are estimated.

In February 2012, 54 lime trees had to be felled to create the building clearance . After the construction work has been completed, new trees will be planted; irrigation aids will be provided for some trees in the immediate vicinity of the new station. As of July 2012, road traffic was relocated to the northern half of the street Unter den Linden, Friedrichstraße was completely closed in this area.

The traffic in the tunnel of the U6 line in the construction site area was interrupted from June 30, 2012, after which preparatory work was carried out. The main construction work for the new crossing station began in August 2012. After the tunnel section of the U6 line in the later station area was completely demolished, the new part of the structure with a length of around 140 meters could be erected. This has a cross-section of 18.25 mx 6.80 m and will later accommodate the two new outer U6 platforms. Around 13,500 m³ of concrete and around 3,050 tons of reinforcing steel were used for this. The U6 line in this area was restarted on November 17, 2013.

The construction of the station shell in the 64,000 m³ building pit was completed in November 2017. Immediately afterwards, the station is expanded, the walls are clad with Kirchheim shell limestone , the columns are given a black color.

Installation

Originally, the station was supposed to go into operation together with the route extension in autumn 2019, but an opening is planned for the end of 2020. After the station is put into operation, 50,000 passengers per day are expected.

The subway station Französische Straße , a little further south, will be shut down after its completion due to the short distance to the new Unter den Linden station . However, it remains as a building.

Connection (planned)

The underground station will be the transfer point between the extended U5 line and the U6 line, as well as to bus lines operated by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe .
