The Eiserne Hand station is located on the Aartalbahn in the Hessian city of Taunusstein . It was opened towards the end of the 19th century on the Wiesbaden - Langenschwalbach section . It was named after the Iron Hand , an incision in the Taunus main ridge . The station was mainly used for excursion traffic and is used as a stopping point for a museum train, although the current route situation does not allow any traffic. It is the highest train station in the Taunus and a cultural monument of the Rheingau-Taunus district .

Geographical location

From Wiesbaden, the Iron Hand offers the lowest Taunus crossing. This advantage was used in earlier centuries for the construction of the Aarstrasse , which is classified as Bundesstrasse 54 in the federal trunk road network . So it made sense to run the Aartalbahn over the Iron Hand. The stopping point is in the middle of the wooded local recreation area of ​​the Hohe Taunus , which is accessible by a well-developed network of hiking trails, namely the Rheinhöhenweg , which in parts is identical to the Herzogsweg , which leads from the Jagdschloss Platte over the Eiserne Hand further west. To the southwest over the Schläferskopf leads from here the traditional Rheingauer Straße, which can now be used as a hiking trail, towards Walluf through the forest.

History and future

With the commissioning of the railway line between Wiesbaden main station and Langenschwalbach on January 15, 1889, regular rail traffic led over the western Taunus ridge. In order to make the wooded area around the Schläferskopf above the spa town of Wiesbaden accessible to day trippers , a two-storey brick building with a gable roof was built as a reception building at the Iron Hand ( 423  m above sea  level ), the highest point of the route, towards the end of the 19th century . In 1910 a large waiting hall, open to the tracks, was added, which was constructed as a hipped roof on wooden supports. It also received an extension that was used for catering services.

Initially the station had several tracks, but has since been converted into a stop. The neighboring stations are Chausseehaus and Hahn-Wehen .

In 1983 passenger traffic on the route was stopped. Since 1986 it has been used by the Nassau Tourist Railway to operate a museum railway. A year later, the buildings and technical systems on the line and the station were listed as a historical monument.

After the station building had been unused for about a year, it was badly damaged by fire in the night of October 13, 2004 and then rebuilt more closely to the original structure, which means that it is still a listed building. The original station clock was recovered from the rubble and returned to its place. Since autumn 2007, the building has been used as a restaurant (Waldgeist zur Eisernen Hand) .

As part of the Wiesbaden Stadtbahn project, a resumption of passenger traffic between Bad Schwalbach and Wiesbaden was discussed between 1998 and 2001 . Today there are plans to reactivate the Aartalbahn as a city or regional train.
