The heavily glaciated Balmhorn is at an altitude of 3697  m above sea level. M. the highest mountain in the Balmhorn group named after him in the western Bernese Alps .

The part of the name “balm” comes from the Celtic word for “rock overhang”, see Balm (toponym) .

location

The steep Balmhorn Glacier flows north towards the Gasterental , the Schwarzgletscher flows west towards Gemmiweg . Below the east wall are the Lötschenpass and the Lötschen glacier. The Balmhorn is connected to the slightly lower Altels to the west by a sharp firn ridge, which good alpinists often cross. Both peaks form a highly attractive conclusion to the Kandertal . The group also includes the cattle horn and the Chli (small) cattle horn.

The Balmhorn summit is the highest point in the Kandersteg community in the Frutigen district in the Swiss canton of Bern . The canton border between Bern and the Valais runs through Balmhorn and Altels. The north side of the massif drains over the Kander , Aare and Rhine into the North Sea , the south side over the Rhone into the Mediterranean .

Alpinism

The normal route to the Balmhorn leads from the Spittelmatte on the Gemmiweg over the Schwarzgletscher and the Zackengrat to the summit. The Gasthaus Schwarenbach , where many famous personalities (e.g. Mark Twain ) have stayed, is the ideal base. The well-known tomcat Tomba also had his home here, who regularly accompanied tourers without outside help at full speed (such as up the Balmhorn). The normal route is also often used by ski mountaineers in winter. Further climbs lead from the Balmhornhütte above the Gasterental over the Wildelsigengrat or the north face as well as from the Gitzifurgge over the Gitzigrat (southeast ridge) to the summit.
