The 2011 European Basketball Championship (officially: EuroBasket 2011 ) was the 37th edition of this tournament and took place from August 31 to September 18, 2011 in Lithuania . Spain was able to defend its title and won its second title. France came in second ahead of Russia . The two finalists received a starting place at the 2012 Olympic Games .
The European basketball championship is a biennial basketball competition between European national teams that is organized by Munich- based FIBA Europe , the European basketball association.
qualification
A total of 24 teams took part in EuroBasket 2011 and qualified for the tournament in different ways. Originally 16 participants were planned, but at the request of the hosting Lithuanian basketball association, on the grounds of the strong European performance density, the European basketball association increased the field to 24 participants two years earlier than planned. This was published on September 5, 2010 as part of the 2010 Basketball World Cup in Turkey at a press conference in Istanbul, after all the games in the first qualifying round for the European Championship had already been completed.
Lithuania was automatically eligible to participate as a host; Furthermore, the other nine European participants in the 2010 World Cup qualified directly for the EuroBasket 2011. The other 14 participants were determined through qualifying games in August 2010 and August 2011.
