Beate Reese (born August 7, 1960 in Lemgo ) is a German museum director, art historian and curator .

biography

Beate Reese studied art history , modern history and sociology at the Ruhr University in Bochum with Max Imdahl , Werner Busch and Reinhart Schleier , where she also submitted her doctorate on melancholy in painting of the New Objectivity . She began her museum work as a volunteer at the Osthaus Museum in Hagen . In 1993 she curated her first major exhibition with Eva Niestrath, the great lady of the Hagen art scene. She was involved in the open box project (1990/1998) by Michael Fehr, then director of the Osthaus Museum, with two contributions.

In 1995 she became deputy director and curator of the municipal gallery in Würzburg . On the occasion of Albert Renger-Patzsch's 100th birthday in 1997, she presented the early photographs of the famous Würzburg native with a solo exhibition. In 1999 she organized the first solo exhibition with the artist and photographer Valentin Schwab in the Städtische Galerie. Reese took an early interest in art and its importance for urban development . Together with the director of the municipal gallery, Marlene Lauter, and the city planner Christian Baumgart, a redesign of the gallery was worked out. In 2002 the municipal collection was able to move to the museum in the Kulturspeicher .

Reese looked after the museum's collection. In 2002 she curated a solo exhibition with Marie-Jo Lafontaine entitled Video Sculpture and Photography . Classical modernism , such as Emy Roeder , also belonged to her exhibition field . In addition, Beate Reese had to deal with the extremely problematic aspect of the entanglement of the house's collection history with the art of National Socialism . She prepared the exhibition Tradition and Propaganda (2013) with her exhibition and the exhibition catalog Tradition und Aufbruch (2003) and subsequently through other exhibitions . The activities of the Kulturspeicher were awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize of the Bavarian Insurance Chamber in 2005.

In 2009 Reese took over the management of the Mülheim an der Ruhr Art Museum . Reese continues the exhibition theme with art of the 20th century, contemporary art and the management of two collections in Würzburg to this day in Mülheim. She began to work specifically with the house's collections. Exhibitions with Pablo Picasso , Otto Pankok , Werner Gilles etc. In Mülheim she was able to expand her exhibition policy through the large collection of the museum: New Objectivity , Lost Generation , Art after 1945 , Art from 1950 to 1960 , the confrontation of the old with the new , the individual - and group exhibitions with contemporary art from Mülheim were among her subjects.

The Hunting for Modern Art exhibitions . Forbidden Arts in the Third Reich (2012) and Liberated Modernism. Art in Germany 1945–1949 (2015/2016) show how Beate Reese seeks to give expression to the concept of modernism with her exhibition planning.

The comic artist Hendrik Dorgathen, who was born in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1957, and the Mülheim photographer Heiner Schmitz were each given a solo exhibition. This group of solo exhibitions includes, for example, those by Knut Wolfgang Maron and Matthias Meyer .

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of August Macke's death in 2014, the Ziegler Collection Foundation , which is housed in the Art Museum, dedicated a special exhibition to the Rhenish Expressionist in the museum. The exhibition was not surprising with 30,000 visitors in two months. Right from the start, Reese placed the modern in a broad spectrum of possible reception. Since taking over, Reese has reported growing visitor numbers every year. The 25,000 visitors annually are an expression of their policy and a recognition expressed in numbers. It made projects like Young Art Experts possible .

Ferdinand Ullrich , director of the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen , and Beate Reese have been spokespersons for the RuhrKunstMuseen since March 2015 . The Mülheim an der Ruhr Art Museum in the Alte Post was one of eight locations in China 8 in 2015 .
