Career

Career start in Sweden

Safari came to Sweden with his family from Iran when he was two. Initially living in Höganäs , the family later moved to Lund . Safari started playing football there in 1992 when he joined the Lunds SK youth team . He went through the individual age groups and was already used as a teenager in the adult team competing in the lower-class amateur area. At his own request, however, he played with the youth team of Lunds SK against the youth team of Malmö FF and was invited to the youth camp of the higher-class Malmö FF after the game.

Safari received a youth contract with Malmö FF and was used in the A-Juniors and in the second team. Before the start of the first division season in 2004 , he signed a training contract with which he was eligible to play for the first team. Under coach Tom Prahl , he contributed to winning the Swedish championship with three appearances this season. Also in the following season he was a supplementary player. From the 2006 season he was able to establish himself as a regular player alongside players such as Ulrich Vinzents , Jonas Sandqvist , Marcus Pode and Anders Andersson .

Safari national coach Lars Lagerbäck , who nominated him for an American tour of the Swedish national team at the beginning of 2008, impressed with his performance . On January 13, 2008 Safari made his debut in the national team when he was in the starting line-up in the 1-0 win over the Costa Rican national team. For a short time still in the circle of the national team and also in the 2008 season until the summer break in all eleven season games for Malmö FF on the field, he still missed the nomination for the squad for the European Championship 2008 in the summer .

Basel

On June 16, 2008 Safari signed a three-year contract with FC Basel . He made his debut for Basel on July 23, 2008 in a 1-0 home win against Grasshopper Club Zurich . From then on, the left-back established himself as a regular player in the team trained by Christian Gross and played 34 of the 36 league games played in his first season. In parallel, he also developed into a constant in the Swedish national team, which, however, missed the qualification for the 2010 World Cup . From summer 2009 he formed the club's defensive line with Beg Ferati , David Abraham , Samuel Inkoom and Çağdaş Atan under the new Basel coach Thorsten Fink . Safari scored his first competitive goal for FC Basel on February 7, 2010 in a 4-0 home win over BSC Young Boys . He won the Swiss championship that year with FC Basel. Safari also played the cup final against FC Lausanne-Sport , which was won 6-0.

In summer 2010 Safari qualified with FC Basel for the third time in the club's history for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . There he was used in all six games.

Anderlecht

Safari did not extend his contract with FC Basel, which expired in the summer of 2011 and was also Swiss champion this year. Shortly after the end of the season he announced his move to the Belgian Pro League for RSC Anderlecht , where he received a three-year contract. After two years in Belgium, in which he won two championships with Anderlecht, Safari returned to the Swiss series champions FC Basel in June 2013.
