history

If you follow Johann Suibert Seibertz , Berlar was first mentioned in a document as Berklare in 1062. The area was probably cleared for agriculture in the 12th and 13th centuries. There was a manor in Berlar, initially owned by a de Berklare family. It was later owned by the von Plettenberg zu Meschede family . Since 1773 the manor was the Meierhof Kreutzmann.

It is not known when the first chapel was built. There is evidence that it already existed in 1697 and was demolished in 1883. Dietrich von Plettenberg, who died in 1697, was buried near the chapel in Berlar; the grave was found in 1884 during clean-up work on the site of the demolished chapel. A new chapel was built from donations according to plans by Josef Kathol, who came from Berlar and worked as a government master builder in Metz and Dortmund . The chapel belonged to the parish of St. Andreas in Velmede until 1862 , then to the parish of St. Margaretha in Ramsbeck .

After disputes with the authorities, a village school was not established until 1882. It was closed in 1968.

The municipality of Berlar was newly formed between 1858 and 1871 when it was spun off from the municipality of Velmede . On April 1, 1910, it was incorporated into Ramsbeck.

Location structure and facilities

Even today there are several farms on site. Tourism also plays a role to a lesser extent. There is a mother-child convalescent home, preventive care and rehabilitation facility St. Altfrid . The place is characterized by half-timbered buildings. An old bakery is a listed building.
