history

The history of the place is closely related to the manor Haus Ostwig , first mentioned in 1200 . A village-like settlement developed slowly. In the 16th century there were only ten houses. In connection with the Thirty Years War , the number dropped to seven houses in 1685. In 1828 there were 19 houses with 263 inhabitants.

The place experienced an upswing with the rapid growth of the Ramsbeck mining industry in the middle of the 19th century. In Ostwig, a large horse farm was set up for the goods traffic of the pits and huts near Ramsbeck. In addition, the construction of large smelting plants began in Ostwig, but was never completed due to the bankruptcy of the mining company Stolberger Zink in 1855. A chimney on the Steinberg, now a listed building, reminds of this time. A hiking trail leads to the Alexanderstollen just behind the southern exit of the village .

Ostwig belonged to the parish of Velmede and became an independent municipality around 1865. With the exception of a small part of the community that came to the city of Olsberg when the community was reorganized , Ostwig has been part of the Bestwig community since January 1, 1975. The formerly independent parish with the parish church of St. Joseph is now part of the Ruhr-Valme-Elpetal pastoral network .

The rifle hall of the St. Antonius Schützenbruderschaft 1873 eV was built in 1912 as a half-timbered building. The traditional shooting festival is extensively celebrated here every second weekend in June.

Among other things, the Anne Frank School was located in Ostwig as a special needs school, today refugee accommodation , the community of Bestwig and the city of Olsberg.

Blazon

Split by silver and red; in front on a red three-mountain a raised black cross, behind a silver mallet crossed diagonally with a silver slate iron, both with gold handles.

description

The black cross in silver reminds of the former sovereign, the elector and archbishop of Cologne, as well as (in connection with the Dreiberg) a symbol of the community. This is a cross that is erected on the Steinberg. Slate cracks and wooden mallets indicate the abundant slate deposits in the area of the municipality. The coat of arms was officially approved on August 23, 1958.
