Bernhard Walter (physicist)

Bernhard Ludwig Johann Heinrich Walter (born December 7, 1861 in Malchin ; † May 28, 1950 in Hamburg ) was a German physicist .

Life

After studying physics in Berlin and Leipzig , Bernhard Walter came to the Johanneum as a teacher in 1885 . In 1887 he moved to the Hamburg State Laboratory.

From 1896 he specialized in radiation physics . Walter created the first X-ray images in Hamburg. In 1905 he was a co-founder of the German Roentgen Society . In the same year he became a professor in Hamburg .

It should be particularly emphasized that Walter was one of the first to point out the need for radiation protection measures for patients and staff.

Overall, he made a valuable contribution to research into the interference of light and X-rays . He also examined the course of sparks and lightning discharges with moving cameras from 1898 to 1899. Walter was an honorary member of the German Radiological Society and was awarded the Albers-Schönberg Medal.

Bernhard Walter died in Hamburg in 1950.
