Bert H. Miller

Bert Henry Miller (* 15. December 1879 in St. George , Utah Territory , †  8. October 1949 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ), of the state of Idaho in the US Senate took .

Miller graduated first in 1901 by the Brigham Young University in Provo , the following year he graduated from the Law School of Cumberland University in Lebanon ( Tennessee ). In 1903 he was inducted into the bar and began practicing as a lawyer in St. Anthony, Idaho. From 1912 to 1914 he served as the Fremont County district attorney .

In 1914, Miller ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . It was not until 1932 that he ran again for public office when he was elected Attorney General of Idaho; re-election followed two years later. He suffered a defeat in 1936 when he wanted to become governor of Idaho, but was not appointed by his party. In 1938 he was a labor commissioner in the Idaho government for two months; in the same year he ran again unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives.

From 1939 to 1940 Miller worked as a lawyer for a Seattle- based division of the US Department of Labor ; another term as Attorney General of Idaho from 1940 to 1944 followed. In 1944 he became a judge on the Idaho Supreme Court .

Finally, Bert Miller ran in the 1948 election to the US Senate. He prevailed against the Republican incumbent Henry Dworshak and took his mandate from January 3, 1949, but died after only nine months in office. Idaho's Governor Charles A. Robins named his predecessor Dworshak as his successor. Miller is thus the last Democrat to hold the Class 2 Senate seat for Idaho.
