Dirk Arthur Kempthorne (born October 29, 1951 in San Diego , California ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of the Interior of the United States under President George W. Bush from May 26, 2006 to January 20, 2009 .

He graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in Political Science in 1975 . His political career began in 1986 as Mayor of Boise , and from 1993 to 1999 he represented Idaho's interests in the United States Senate . As of 1999, he was the 30th governor of this state . Between 2003 and 2004 he chaired the National Governors Association .

On May 26, 2006, his nomination for Minister of the Interior was confirmed by the Senate and he took up his new post that same day. A few hours earlier he had resigned as governor of Idaho. With the end of George W. Bush's presidency, Kempthorne also left the government in January 2009.
