Gale Norton

Gale Ann Norton (born March 11, 1954 in Wichita , Kansas ) is an American politician . She was the United States Secretary of the Interior in the cabinet of President George W. Bush from January 2001 to March 2006, making her the first woman to hold this office.

Career

Gale Norton graduated magna cum laude from the University of Denver in 1975 and received her Juris Doctor (JD) (completion of three years of undergraduate law in the USA) with honors in 1978. During her studies she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Association . In the late 1970s she was a member of the Libertarian Party , the third largest party in the United States, and was almost elected party leader in 1980. She belonged to different groups of the " wise use " or " free-market environmentalist " movement. As a lawyer, she once wrote about some corporate rights to "pollute". She also served as Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Agriculture and Senior Attorney for the Mountain States Legal Foundation from 1979 to 1983 .

Norton was Attorney General for the state of Colorado from 1991 to 1999, and prior to the election she was an associate solicitor for the Department of the Interior in Washington, DC . In 1996 she ran as a Republican for a seat in the US Senate , but was beaten by Wayne Allard in the inner-party primary . Prior to becoming Secretary of the Interior in 2001, she was an attorney with Brownstein, Hyatt & Farber, PC . In 2004 she was traded as a possible successor to the Senate post of Ben Nighthorse Campbell in Colorado, but finally decided against it, so that the Democrat Ken Salazar won the seat.

On March 10, 2006, she announced her resignation as US Secretary of the Interior at the end of the month. It was time for her to look for new goals outside of politics, Norton said a day before her 52nd birthday. In a letter of resignation, she announced that she would switch to the private sector.

She is married to John Hughes.
