The Zwettl district is an administrative district of the Province of Lower Austria .

history

The district has existed since 1868 and included the then dissolved districts of Allentsteig , Groß Gerungs , Ottenschlag and Weitra .

In 1899, the north-western part (the then judicial district of Weitra ) came to the newly established Gmünd district (RGBL No. 123/1899) and the southern part (then the judicial district of Ottenschlag ) to the newly established district of Pöggstall (RGBL No. 153/1899). After the Pöggstall district was dissolved, the Ottenschlag judicial district returned to the Zwettl district in 1938.

With an area of 1,399.12 km², the district is the largest district in the state. It is located in the western Waldviertel and is also assigned to the main region Waldviertel in spatial planning .
