Birthday ( english birthday ) is a birthday song of the British band The Beatles from 1968. Written was there by Paul McCartney and John Lennon , and was published under the joint Copyright Lennon / McCartney on the double album The Beatles (aka The White Album ).

background

The Beatles wrote the song on September 18, 1968. The band was in the studio earlier than usual that day because they wanted to interrupt their recordings to watch the film Schlagerpiraten on TV that evening . McCartney was already in the studio and had worked out a guitar riff around which the band developed the song Birthday and recorded it on the spot.

admission

Birthday was recorded on September 18, 1968 at Abbey Road Studios , London . The absent Beatles producer George Martin was replaced that day by Chris Thomas , assisted by sound engineer Ken Scott . By around 9 p.m. the band recorded 20 takes of the song in an instrumental version. The band then went to Paul McCartney's nearby apartment to watch TV together as intended. At around 11 p.m. they continued working on the song. There was singing added. The present wives of John Lennon and George Harrison , Yoko Ono and Pattie Harrison , sang in the chorus of the song . After adding more instruments to the recording, the band made a mono mix of the song. The recording session was not over until the morning of September 19, 1968.

publication

Birthday appeared as the first song on the second record of the double album The Beatles on November 22, 1968. In the following years only a few cover versions of the song were released. Underground Sunshine achieved a top 40 hit in the United States in 1969 . Paul Weller sang it on McCartney's 70th birthday in 2012 and released its version as a music download . McCartney himself released a live version as a single in 1990 , which reached number 29 in the British singles chart.
