The Bonaire national soccer team is the national soccer team of the Dutch overseas territory of Bonaire in the Caribbean . She is a full member of the North and Central American football association CONCACAF and the Caribbean Football Union . However, it does not belong to the world football association FIFA and is therefore not entitled to participate in qualifying matches for world football championships.

history

The island of Bonaire has been one of the three special communities of the Netherlands in the Caribbean since the Dutch Overseas Territory, the Netherlands Antilles, was dissolved on October 10, 2010 . Up to this point in time, football players from Bonaire could play for the football team of the Netherlands Antilles or the Netherlands . Occasionally, Bonaire appeared in friendly matches with its own team. According to the association, there has been a selection of football since 1960, and games against the other ABC islands of Curaçao and Aruba were regularly played in the 1960s to 1980s .

Since the political reorganization, the development of a national football selection has been pushed by the Bonaire Football Association and Bonaire has since played for the first time against other Caribbean teams and competed in tournaments. On February 28, 2010, before the Dutch Antilles were dissolved, the team from Bonaire played an international match against the selection from the neighboring island of Curaçao , which was lost 4-0. The first game after the political reorganization took place on October 29, 2010 as part of the first ABCS tournament , the tournament for Dutch-speaking teams from South America. It ended 4: 2 for the opposing team from Suriname . Bonaire finished the tournament as the last of the four participating teams. At the ABCS tournament in 2011 Bonaire was much more successful and won the tournament with a 4-3 on penalties against Aruba in the final. Bonaire also took part in the following three editions up to 2015 and came in fourth and last twice and third once.

On April 19, 2013, the Bonaire Football Association became an associate member of the North and Central American Football Association CONCACAF . The association has been a full member since June 10, 2014 and can thus take part in qualifying games for the CONCACAF Gold Cup continental championship.

In qualifying for the Caribbean Championship in Jamaica in 2014 , Bonaire failed in the first round to Barbados and Martinique after they had prevailed in a pre-qualification against Montserrat and the US Virgin Islands .

Bonaire did not participate in the qualification for the last Caribbean Championship in 2017 and had no official international matches from the beginning of 2015 to September 2018. The national team only started again when they qualified for the first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League and the subsequent final in 2019. Bonaire qualified for the lowest division C and stayed there after taking second place in Group C2 behind the Bahamas and before the British Virgin Islands .
