The Bracelet ( German  band ) is the trophy that every player who a tournament of the World Series of Poker , get wins in addition to the prize money. Although it has only been officially awarded since the 1976 World Series of Poker , a bracelet now equates to winning a tournament.

The quality of the bracelet has increased steadily over the years. While the first were only worth a few hundred dollars , today's bracelets are designed by renowned jewelers.

history

Bracelets have only been awarded at the World Series since 1976. The winner of the 1970 World Series of Poker , Johnny Moss , was awarded a silver cup and the money that he had earned on the tournament days for his triumph.

According to Becky Behnen, the daughter of World Series of Poker founder Benny Binion , an undescribed trophy was awarded from 1971 to 1974. Even at the World Series of Poker 1975 , not a bracelet but a trophy was awarded.

Today, the number of bracelets a player has usually equals the number of tournaments they have won, even if that includes tournaments before 1976.

There are two special cases in which players received a bracelet even without winning a tournament: At the World Series of Poker in 1980 and 1981, poker players HD Hale and David "Chip" Reese received gold bracelets in recognition of their outstanding performance in various poker variants. This award, which today can best be compared to the Player of the Year Award, is not counted as an official bracelet.

The first bracelet, which was awarded in 1976, is said to have looked "like a hammered flat nugget ". These bracelets were valued at around $ 500. From the 1980s, the sole production rights lay with the Las Vegas- based jeweler Mordechai Yerushalmi. That partnership came to an end when Harrah's Entertainment bought the rights to the World Series of Poker in 2004.

The bracelets that were given to the winners at the 2006 World Series of Poker were made by Frederick Goldman, Inc., while Swiss watchmaker Corum included some watches in the prize package. The bracelets of the world champions were equipped with 259 stones and weighed 7.2 carats . In addition, 120 grams of gold and white gold were implemented. Rubies were also used to mimic the card symbols of hearts and diamonds . For the spade a sapphire was used as cross three black diamonds were used.

In 2007 Corum became the sole producer of the bracelets. Some of the winners received both a bracelet and a valuable wristwatch. Four different bracelets were produced for the 56 competitions. The winners of the "ordinary" 53 competitions received the standard variant with 53 diamonds. The bracelet for the winner of the women's tournament was set with four black diamonds, two rubies and 87 blue sapphires. The trophy, which went to the winner of the $ 50,000 HORSE tournament, Freddy Deeb , had 91 black diamonds and two rubies. The bracelet for the winner of the main tournament, Jerry Yang , had 120 diamonds on 136 grams of white gold. While the real value of the bracelets has not been disclosed, the typical price for a Corum watch is between $ 1,500 and $ 30,000.

Prestigious

In the early years, the bracelets were not very popular. The ten-time tournament winner Doyle Brunson stated that he didn't care about the piece of jewelry after his first triumph.

Many professional poker players now believe that there are two types of players - those who have already won a bracelet and those who are still waiting. The former would belong to an exclusive club. World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack stated in 2006 that it was impossible for a player to overestimate a bracelet. It is to be equated with the victory of an ice hockey team in the Stanley Cup .

Many poker players also focus on the recognition that winning a tournament brings. So was Phil Gordon that he than anything else wanted the bracelet more. Freddy Deeb, on the other hand, stated that he did not appreciate his first bracelet correctly, but that his current one meant everything to him. The actress and bracelet wearer Jennifer Tilly stated immediately after her victory in 2005 that a bracelet was better than an Oscar.

The current record holder, measured by the number of tournament victories, is the American Phil Hellmuth , who has collected a total of 15 bracelets since 1989. That puts him five bracelets ahead of Doyle Brunson , Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan . The latter was the first person to win ten tournaments.

Six-time tournament winner Ted Forrest is said to have bought a bracelet from Hamid Dastmalchi for 1500 dollars that he didn't like. Forrest also reported that three of his bracelets had been stolen over the years and he gave one to his daughter. The five players with the most bracelets are:
