background
After the resignation of William Ewart Gladstone in 1894, at the explicit request of Queen Victoria , the Liberal Minister Lord Rosebery succeeded him as Prime Minister . Voting was based on the majority voting system, there was no threshold clause . A total of 1,180 candidates competed, 189 of which were unopposed. Most of them, 132, ran for the Conservatives and Liberal Unionists, 42 for the Irish Parliamentary Party , 11 candidates for the Liberals and 4 other candidates for the supporters of Charles Parnell who had split off from the Irish Parliamentary Party. Of the 670 seats, only 481 were contested.
