Description and history
The castle Alt-Sternberg is considered direct predecessor of today received and 1.5 km to the southeast lies Burg Sternberg . It consisted of a three-part rampart and moat with outer works, outer and main castle. The moats of the castle were originally up to 15 m wide and about 10-12 m deep.
The castle complex was extensively archaeologically examined by Otto Weerth in 1908. During these investigations, cellar pits of five houses could be detected in the area of the 1000 m² main castle. Medieval shards, including Pingsdorf pottery , remains of iron implements, a glass ring and pet bones, mainly from pigs, were found inside the pits . The most important finds also include two coins: a coin minted under Heinrich von Champagne from the period from 1192 to 1197 and a Soest halfling from the beginning of the 13th century.
Based on the existing finds, it is assumed that Alt-Sternberg was used from the end of the 11th to around the beginning of the 13th century. Written sources about the builders of the castle have not survived. Alt-Sternberg and Sternberg Castle were probably used in parallel for a certain period of time, with the older Alt-Sternberg Castle eventually being abandoned.
