The Castle Wolf Hagen is a part Outbound castle in the small town of Wolf Hagen (Ritterstraße 1) in the district of Kassel ( Hessen ).

history

According to current research, the castle and town of Wolfhagen were founded between 1230 and 1231, presumably as a robbery by the Ludowingers in what was then Mainz territory. According to a representation of the home and history association Wolfhagen, the city founded by Konrad von Thuringia was initially surrounded by ramparts, moats and palisades .

However, this fortification was soon replaced by a one meter thick and 4 to 6 meter high stone wall with a walkway, which was completed in 1302, so that a complete fortification system enclosed the city. The city fortifications included eleven towers.

Wolfhagen Castle was not explicitly mentioned until 1246, although a new building was apparently built in 1513. After that, the castle appears as a place of judgment.

At the end of the 16th century the castle fell into desolation and was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century, with the octagonal keep being laid down in 1606 . Only remains of the curtain wall and parts of an attached castle building, remains of the gate tower and the barrel cellar have been preserved .

Todays use

In the former tithe barn , which was completely rebuilt in 1920, and the former renting farm from the late 17th century, the "Wolfhager Land Regional Museum" has been located since 1980. Both buildings are mostly built with stone material from the old castle, and in the core of the Renthof are the gate tower of the castle and part of the curtain wall.
