Riegel began playing football at FC Pfeil Nürnberg before he was signed as a midfielder by 1. FC Nürnberg in 1914 .

He was considered a clever and lithe technician. He was also nicknamed The Spider , because he quasi trapped opponents in his web with his combination game. But he had weaknesses in the header and when it had to get down to business.

With 1. FC Nürnberg he was also able to win the first German championship after the First World War . They won 2-0 in 1920 against arch rivals SpVgg Fürth . The two best German teams of the time faced each other in this final. So it's no wonder that the national team was mainly made up of players from these two clubs. And “Carla” Riegel also benefited from it.

The club was also able to win the German championship in 1921 . Vorwärts 90 Berlin didn't stand a chance at 5-0. The Nürnberger could have won even higher, but they limited themselves to inspiring the audience more with special pieces. In the following final of the mainland championship they even played a draw against Sparta Prague . So there was no team on the European mainland that could defeat Nuremberg.

The year 1922 followed with its two memorable finals and no winner. Twice played Hamburger SV and 1. FC Nuremberg against each other twice, it was a draw after extra time. The second game even had to be canceled because Nuremberg didn't have enough players on the field. First Willi Böß was sent off, then Anton Kugler lost five teeth in a collision, then Heinrich Träger was sent off and Luitpold Popp also had to leave the court injured. Referee Peco Bauwens had no choice but to stop the game. Hamburger SV was then declared the winner, but later renounced the title that was given as a gift. They made up for it in 1923.

In 1924, Carl Riegel met again with his Nürnbergers and HSV in the final. This time the club could not be beaten again and won 2-0.

In 1925 the club won the championship again, but this time it was hard work against FSV Frankfurt . It was 1-0 only after extra time. Carl Riegel, whose trademark was narrow and washed-out trousers that reached to the knees, could have decided the game in the 53rd minute, but his penalty was saved by Frankfurt goalkeeper Jean Koch.

But this game was a first small sign that the glory days of the club were coming to an end. In the championship of 1925/26, the team was eliminated in the Bavarian championship. In 1927 the club won the championship again, but Riegel was not part of the championship team.

National team

Riegel played seven international matches for the senior national team , for which he made his debut on June 27, 1920 in Zurich in the 1: 4 defeat against the Swiss national team. His last appearance as a national player he played on June 29, 1923 in Stockholm in the 1: 2 defeat against the national team of Sweden .
