Carlos Gustavo Castillo Mattasoglio (born February 28, 1950 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru .

Life

Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio studied from 1968 to 1973 at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and earned a degree in social sciences . He then entered the Santo Toribio di Mogrovejo seminary in Lima and was sent to Rome to study. He received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Lima on July 15, 1984 .

He stayed as a seminary priest in Rome and obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1985 . In 1987 he was at the Gregorian in dogmatic theology to Dr. theol. PhD . The topic of his dissertation was the concept of repentance in the theological thinking of Bartolomé de Las Casas .

After his return to Peru he worked in parish pastoral care, among other things as pastor of the Las Nazarenas pilgrimage church in Lima. A leading role model in his pastoral care was Auxiliary Bishop Germán Schmitz . From 1987 until his appointment as bishop, Castillo was a lecturer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru . He is deputy chairman of the Consejo Lima of the Latin America-Germany Scholarship Association. From 1991 to 1999 he was responsible for university pastoral care in Lima and, from 1996, also for youth pastoral care and vocational pastoral care. From 1990 to 2001 he was also a member of the youth commission of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference .

On January 25, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Lima. The Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, Archbishop Nicolas Girasoli , donated him episcopal ordination on March 2 of the same year . Co- consecrators were his predecessor Juan Luis Cardinal Cipriani Thorne , the Archbishop of Huancayo , Pedro Ricardo Cardinal Barreto Jimeno SJ , the Archbishop of Trujillo , Héctor Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte OFM , and the emeritus Bishop of Chimbote , Luis Armando Bambarén Gastelumendi SJ.
