The Archdiocese of Lima ( Latin : Archidioecesis Limana , Spanish : Arquidiócesis / Arzobispado de Lima ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Peru with its seat in Lima .

history

The diocese of Lima was on May 14, 1541 by Pope Paul III. built with the papal bull Illuis fulciti praesidio from cessions of territory of the diocese of Cuzco . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan .

On February 12, 1546 the diocese of Lima was by Pope Paul III. raised to the archbishopric and metropolitan seat. The Archbishop of Lima has been the primate of Peru since 1572 . Between 1946 and 2001, all archbishops of Lima were created cardinals , so that Lima was traditionally a bishopric with the dignity of cardinals.

Separation of territories

The archbishopric gave up several times in its history parts of its territory to establish new dioceses.
