history

The Castello San Niccolò was first mentioned in 1029 as Corte di Vado . From 1212 on, it was under Guglielmo Novello of the Guidi family . The place was under the control of the Guidi until 1349, after which it fell under the control of Florence due to the revolts against Galeotto Guidi that had begun in 1342. In 1440 the place was besieged and captured by Niccolò Piccinino .

After the Castello lost its importance, the Borgo alla Strada (today Strada in Casentino ) was built on the valley floor as a market square on the road connecting Florence. The first town center was Vado dal Guado , which is located directly on the bridge to the Castello and which today belongs to the Strada district. This is where the first town center was built around today's Piazza Matteotti (formerly also Piazza del Mercato ) and later Piazza Umberto I. The municipality of Castel San Niccolò emerged from the former places Vado, Garliano and Cetica and their respective districts. It was named after the church Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Niccolò , which is close to the castle . By decree of Grand Duke Leopold II , Borgo alla Collina and Montemignaio were added in 1776, the latter place becoming independent in 1808 by a decree of Napoleon . In 1859 the place was assigned to the province of Arezzo, in 1868 the places Caiano, Ristonchi and Battifolle were assigned to the place. At the end of the 19th century the place experienced a population increase, which was mainly caused by the silk, leather and cotton processing industries.
