Christopher Michael Sanders (born March 12, 1962 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) is an American film animator and the inventor of the characters for Lilo & Stitch . He currently lives in Los Angeles.

Life

He is of German, Dutch and Jewish descent. Sanders was born in Colorado , where he later grew up. As a child, Chris Sanders was a big fan of Beatrix Potter's books, a passion that he shares to this day and also includes in his films.

After working as an animator for the Disney film Mulan in 1997 , he filmed Lilo & Stitch , where he had also written the script with his friend Dean DeBlois . Sanders also lent his voice to the main character of Lilo & Stitch . He was involved in many other Disney productions himself, including as a voice actor .

Disney later announced that there would be a television series of the film. Sanders himself stayed with the series as a voice actor, but he was upset that the series did not really correspond to his idea of a continuation of the project, and he mostly rejected the new characters. In early 2005, Sanders was still working on the animated film American Dog , which is based on a story he wrote. In March 2007, Chris Sanders was fired from the project. Sanders announced shortly after that he wanted to leave the Disney Company in order to have more freedom in his works and to be able to carry out. He switched to Dreamworks , which he says he likes better and is less strict about the films than Disney.

His first film in which he worked there as a screenwriter is How To Train Your Dragon . For this film he was nominated for an Oscar together with his partner DeBlois and received two Annie Awards in 2011 . In 1998 he had already received this award twice for his work on Mulan .

Chris Sanders also works as an author and illustrator , where he has authored several books, including many non-fiction books. One of his more famous works is The Art of Mulan , which he co-wrote with Jeff Kurtti. He also directed together with Kirk DeMicco and wrote the script for the film Die Croods , which celebrated its German premiere on February 15, 2013 at the 63rd Berlinale in Berlin .
