The competition for the Coupe de France in the 2009/10 season was the 93rd edition of the French football cup for men's teams. This season, 7,317 clubs from France and its overseas departments and territories took part, which again set a new record.

The defending champion , the Breton second division side En Avant Guingamp , was eliminated this time in the round of 16. Cup winner was Paris Saint-Germain , who won the trophy for the eighth time in his eleventh appearance in the final. Opponent Association Sportive de Monaco played their ninth cup final and is still waiting to bring the Coupe back to the Principality after 1991 .

After the qualification rounds organized by the regional subdivisions of the regional association FFF , the first division teams and the lower-class defending champions also intervened in the thirty-second finals . From this round onwards, the competition will be held in the classic cup mode; This means in particular that the respective fixtures are drawn without seed lists or a performance or regional pre-sorting of the clubs from all clubs still in competition and only one game is played, at the end of which a winner has to be determined (be it through overtime and penalty shoot-outs ), who then qualifies for the next round, while the loser is eliminated. Home rights are also determined by drawing lots for every match, but since 2003/04 with the restriction that clubs that have to compete against an eleven that play at least two levels - not to be confused with league levels - automatically receive home rights. Occasionally, however, amateur clubs agreed to forego their home advantage in exchange for payment (this season the FC Municipal d'Aubervilliers, who played their thirty-second final match against Paris Saint-Germain in Parc des Princes ), or they soaked in against an attractive opponent larger stadium in the region (like FC Trélissac, which hosted Olympique Marseille in Périgueux ). The general schedule was drawn up so early that the wishes of the broadcasting TV stations TF1 and Eurosport could be taken into account.

For the second division, the competition turned out to be disappointing: only ten of the 20 clubs even reached the first main round. There were three clubs from La Grande-Motte , Seclin and Marquette-lez-Lille , which compete in the eighth and ninth highest leagues. Only three second division clubs made it to the round of 16, for which the cup ended there as well as for the last two third and one of the two fourth division clubs . The last remaining participant from overseas, AS Excelsior Saint-Joseph from Réunion , was eliminated in the 8th round. The role of the most successful "little ones" fell to two fourth-rate leagues: Vesoul Haute-Saône Football made it to the round of 16 and the US Quevilly was able to prevail on their course up to the semifinals even against two first division, before they were defeated by the eventual winner and with the Victory in the “Thumble's Cup” had to console.

This competition suffered badly from the severe onset of winter in December, which, in connection with a particularly tight schedule due to the World Cup in South Africa , meant that numerous catch-up games were required up to and including the round of 16; some games could only be played when the next cup round was already running. In addition, the competition was affected by measures against violent fan groups from Paris Saint-Germain, which, however, suffered from PSG's respective opponents at their "home" games: the AJ Auxerre had to play their quarter-finals in front of completely empty spectators, the US Quevilly in the semi-finals in Caen and thus compete in a neutral place.

Quarter finals

Games on March 23 and 24, 2010

(O)This game took place in an agreement between the French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux , the two clubs, the prefecture of the Yonne department and the FFF in a stadium with no spectators. The background to this is the increasing, violent clashes between various Parisian fan groups, which again claimed a fatality at the end of February. PSG had to play two league games this season in front of empty ranks.

Semifinals

Games on April 13th and 14th, 2010

(q)The USQ also wanted to play this game in the Stade Robert-Diochon of neighboring FC Rouen ; However, by order of the French Interior Ministry, Quevilly's home game was moved to Caen , about 110 km away, for security reasons . In order to have as few problems as possible with violent PSG fans, there were also massive restrictions on the purchase of tickets: tickets could only be purchased personalized (with name imprint; no online sale) at advance booking offices in Quevilly, Rouen and Caen, and only by people residing in one of the five Norman departments.

Special occurrences

The final pairing Monaco against PSG, both only in midfield in this season's league table, had already existed 25 years earlier . For Monaco coach Lacombe this was the third participation in the national cup in five years after 2006 (victory with Paris Saint-Germain) and 2009 (defeat with Stade Rennes). His counterpart won his third coupe - albeit the first on the dugout after Kombouaré had already won two trophies as a player ( 1993 and 1995 ), and that in Paris Saint-Germain dress.

At the capital club there were five players from its last final ( 2008 ), namely Armand (this was the only one who had already been in the winning final in 2006), Camara, Ceará, Clément and Luyindula (he was already successful with Racing Strasbourg in 2001 ).

The attendance record for a cup final from the previous year was not achieved. The separation of the hostile PSG fan groups was obviously successful: there were no noteworthy arguments in the area surrounding the game.
