Village linden in Cusy

Cusy is a French commune with 1,850 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Rumilly in the Arrondissement of Annecy .

geography

Cusy is located at 550  m , about 17 kilometers southwest of the prefecture of Annecy and 49 kilometers south of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends on a plateau at the northern foot of the Montagne de Bange, in the Albanais , at the exit of the Chéran from the Cluse de Bange, a gorge in which the river breaks through the western edge of the Bauges massif . The community is located within the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 16.93 km² large municipality covers a section of the Alpine foothills in the southern Albanais. The north-eastern border runs along the Chéran. This breaks through the anticline of Semnoz and Montagne de Bange (edge chain of the Bauges) in a characteristic clus and then emerges into the molasse layers of the Alpine foothills, into which it is also cut.

The municipal area of Cusy is divided into two very different natural spatial units. The relatively weak relief in the north-western part is occupied by the valley of Cusy, an approximately 1 km wide and 4 km long, formerly swampy plain that connects the valley of the Chéran and the Sierre (tributary of the Lac du Bourget ). This plain is flanked in the northwest by the height of Chainaz ( 724  m ). In contrast, the southeastern part of the municipality shows strong relief differences. It includes the western slope of the Montagne de Bange and the southern steep valley slope of the Cluse de Bange. The wooded slopes are interrupted by striking rock walls made of Urgon limestone, some of which are over 100 m high. The highest point in Cusy is reached on the Montagne de Bange at 1365  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Cusy includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Les Vautrey ( 540  m ) on the plateau west of the valley of the Chéran
  • Baleva ( 520  m ) on the plateau west of the valley of the Chéran
  • Les Mièges ( 550  m ) in the valley, south-west of Cusy
  • Lachat ( 535  m ) in the valley of Cusy
  • Chez les Rey ( 650  m ) on the southern slope of the Chainaz
  • Pétela ( 580  m ) in the valley basin at the western foot of the Montagne de Bange
  • Les Chavonnes ( 660  m ) on a terrace at the foot of the Montagne de Bange
  • La Tropaz ( 580  m ) on a terrace at the entrance to the Cluse de Bange

Neighboring municipalities of Cusy are Héry-sur-Alby and Gruffy in the north, Allèves in the east, Arith and Saint-Offenge in the south and Saint-Ours and Chainaz-les-Frasses in the west.

history

Cusy is first mentioned in a document in 1022; later the Latinized name Cusiacum also appeared . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Cus (s) ius and means something like country estate of Cus (s) ius. In the Middle Ages, Cusy was the center of a Kastlanei and in the 13th century received certain freedoms from the Counts of Geneva . In 1860, Cusy was separated from the canton of Albens in the Savoie department and incorporated into the newly created canton of Alby-sur-Chéran in the Haute-Savoie department.

The parish church of Saint-Christophe was built in 1887 in the neo-Romanesque style. The ruins of the Château de Cusy (17th century) and the Château de Fesigny (12th century) have been preserved. At the entrance to the Cluse de Bange is the suspension bridge Pont de l'Abîme , which spans the Chéran canyon at a height of 96 m.

With 1850 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cusy is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 1,478 inhabitants in Cusy). Since the mid-1970s, however, there has been a significant increase in population thanks to the residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cusy was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy and Chambéry area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Aix-les-Bains to Lescheraines in the Bauges massif. Another regional road connection is with Rumilly . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 7 km away.
