The Döblinger cemetery is a cemetery in the 19th Vienna district Döbling .

location

The Döblinger Friedhof is located in the south of Döbling on the border with the Währing district in the cadastral municipality of Oberdöbling , Hartäckerstraße 65. The cemetery is located in the west by Felix-Dahn-Straße, in the south by Peter-Jordan-Straße, in the east by Borkowskigasse and limited to the north by Hartäckergasse. The cemetery covers an area of 49,981 square meters and is home to 6,853 grave sites.

history

Older Döblinger cemeteries

While the deceased Unterdöbling were buried in the "Freythof von Heiligenstadt ", the dead from Oberdöbling were originally buried around the Döbling church . The Döblinger Friedhof was expanded in 1781 and occupied until 1783. In the course of the demolition and reconstruction of the church, the cemetery around the parish church was probably abandoned in 1826.

In place of the cemetery around the Döblingen church, a new cemetery was established in the course of the elevation to an independent parish. In addition to the deceased residents of Oberdöbling, the cemetery was now also intended for the deceased from Unterdöbling, which had been added to the Döbling parish. The cemetery was laid out on the edge of Unterdöbling on the road to Grinzing, today's Billrothstrasse. Due to the increasing occupancy, the cemetery had to be closed in 1885. It was converted into Strauss-Lanner-Park in 1928 .

The new Döblinger Friedhof

Israelite Department
Department of the Döblinger Monastery Sisters

Permission to found a new cemetery was granted to the communities of Ober- and Unterdöbling on April 28, 1880 by the kk district authority of Hernals. A plot of land on the Türkenschanze was chosen as the location for the new cemetery. The plot was in the shape of a rhomboid and comprised 7.5 yokes . The complex was planned by the architects Avanzo and Lange and, according to the planning, should offer space for the burial of 30,000 deceased. The cemetery was opened on June 10, 1885 by the Döblingen pastor Dr. Hulesch.

The Döblinger Friedhof was open to all denominations. After the opening of the Israelite Department in 1888, the city council approved a burial site for Muslim soldiers from the Imperial and Royal Military Territorial Command on February 13, 1894. The Muslim section had an area of 404.4 square meters for 40 individual graves. The area was initially approved for 20 years and expanded by 157 square meters in 1900. In addition to denominational minorities and the dead of the two communities Ober- and Unterdöbling, the deceased of the city of Vienna were also buried in the Döblinger Friedhof, as many Viennese did not want to be buried in the central cemetery and the suburban communities were able to make large profits as a result.

Cemetery expansions

The cemetery was expanded by 15,584 square meters between 1899 and 1901. The land for this was partly bought or expropriated. In 1906, the cemetery area was again expanded by 9,334 square meters to 57,271 square meters. In addition, the Israelite Department was enlarged by a previously unused part of the cemetery. The existing morgue was renovated between 1907 and 1908 and a chapel was built. Since the Döblinger Friedhof could no longer be expanded, the Grinzinger Friedhof was designated as a replacement cemetery in 1911 . Due to a lack of space, from April 1917 the dead of the associated district had to be buried in the replacement cemetery. It was not until 1920 that the State Office for Army Affairs refrained from further burial of Muslim soldiers that new graves could be built on the vacated part of the cemetery. A new installation of own graves took place again between 1929 and 1931. Due to the renovation work carried out in 1961, abandoned and neglected grave sites could be reclaimed and reallocated.

building

In 1925 the morgue was redesigned and a second cemetery was created. Another redesign took place in 1931. In 1969 a cooling system was installed in the burial chamber. The rebuilding of the funeral hall took place between 1971 and 1972 according to plans by the architect Erich Boltenstern , the rear wall of the apse was designed by the academic painter Hermann Bauch . The cemetery, in which cremation celebrations can also be held, has a maximum capacity of 160 people.
