Daniel Martin (born August 20, 1986 in Birmingham , United Kingdom ) is an Irish cyclist .
Daniel Martin is the son of the former British cyclist Neil Martin and the nephew of the Tour de France winner Stephen Roche , whose son Nicolas is therefore his cousin. Martin was born in England, but has both British and Irish citizenship. He decided to start under an Irish license while he was in the juniors , after having become the British junior road champion in 2004.
Athletic career
During his time in the U23 age group, which he competed in the service of the well-known and successful French team VC La Pomme Marseille , Daniel Martin, who was considered a great talent for climbing climbs at an early age, was able to attract attention with some very good results : He won a stage in the Giro della Valle d'Aosta stage race in 2006 and came second in the overall standings. In the following year he was able to win a stage there again and secure fourth place in the overall standings as well as the points classification. At the Tour des Pays de Savoie 2007 he won a part and was able to win the overall ranking; In addition, he was twice second on stages of the Ronde de l'Isard , which he finished fourth in the overall standings. At the end of the 2007 season he drove for the US professional Continental Team Slipstream as a stagiaire and signed his first professional contract for the following season.
Martin had his first full season as a professional in 2008 for Garmin-Chipotle presented by H3O and the first successes came straight away with a stage win and the overall ranking of the French stage race Route du Sud , the win of the Irish championship in the road race and one Fourth place in the overall ranking of the Tour of Britain . In 2009 he was able to win the junior ranking of the Mediterranean Tour , a stage race which he was able to finish third in the overall ranking.
In 2013 he won the overall ranking of the UCI WorldTour stage race Tour of Catalonia , the spring classic Liège – Bastogne – Liège and the ninth stage of the Tour de France from Saint-Girons to Bagnères-de-Bigorre . With the fall classic Il Lombardia , Martin won his second cycling monument in 2014 .
