Philippe Gilbert (born July 5, 1982 in Verviers ) is a Belgian racing cyclist . He became road world champion in 2012 and won numerous classics , including four of the five monuments of cycling , namely the Giro di Lombardia in 2009 and 2010 , Liège – Bastogne – Liège in 2011 , the Tour of Flanders in 2017 and Paris-Roubaix in 2019 .

Career

Philippe Gilbert started his professional career in 2003 with the team La Française des Jeux . In his first year as a professional, he won the ninth stage of the Tour de l'Avenir .

In the next few years Gilbert developed into a specialist in difficult, especially hilly, one-day races . In 2006 he won his first "semi-classic" with the Omloop Het Volk , in 2008 the first classic victory at Paris-Tours and with the Giro di Lombardia 2009 for the first time a "monument of cycling". In 2012 he became world champion in road racing in Valkenburg through an attack on the target slope .

Gilbert's most successful year was 2011: He won the three Ardennes classics Amstel Gold Race , La Flèche Wallonne and Liège – Bastogne – Liège in the same year as the second driver after Davide Rebellin . He also won u. a. Stages at Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de France , won the one-day races Pfeil von Brabant and Monte Paschi Eroica , was the overall winner of the Tour of Belgium, Belgian champions in both road racing and time trial . In the individual classification of the UCI WorldTour 2011 , he took first place. Gilbert was the winning rider of the season.

At the end of 2011 he left the Omega Pharma-Lotto team and switched to the US UCI WorldTeam BMC . In 2012 Gilbert won two stages in the Vuelta a España . At the UCI Road World Championships 2012 in Valkenburg , he became world champion in road racing through a solo attack on the finish slope . A week earlier, he won the silver medal in the team time trial .

After Gilbert won only one stage of the Vuelta a España in 2013 , he won the Amstel Gold Race for the third time in 2014. At the end of the UCI WorldTour 2014 , he won a stage in the Tour of Beijing and was the overall winner of this series.

In 2015 Gilbert won two stages of the Giro d'Italias . Pino Cerami was also successful at the GP and the Tour de Wallonie . At the beginning of 2016 he won the Spanish one-day race Murcia Tour . In March 2016, Philippe Gilbert and his teammate Loïc Viegen were attacked by two drunk drivers while they were on the road. Gilbert broke his finger and had to be operated on. The two men were briefly detained by the police. The police are also investigating Gilbert for defending himself with pepper spray , which is banned in Belgium. After this incident, Gilbert won two stages of the Tour of Luxembourg at the beginning of June and became Belgian road champion.

In November 2016, Gilbert was sentenced to pay 300,000 euros to his former Omega Pharma-Lotto team for breaching his contract when he switched to BMC Racing Team in 2012.

For the 2017 season, Gilbert switched to Quick-Step Floors . After winning a stage and the overall ranking of the Three Days of De Panne 2017 , he won the subsequent Tour of Flanders after a solo journey of 55 kilometers . Two weeks later, he won the Amstel Gold Race for the fourth time in a two-man sprint against Michał Kwiatkowski , although he suffered a kidney tear in a fall at the start of the race, which forced him to end the 2017 classic season early.

In the 2018 season, Gilbert finished third in the Tour of Flanders when his teammate Niki Terpstra won . On the mountainous 16th stage of the 2018 Tour de France , he fell while in the lead on a descent. He finished the stage and was awarded the red number , but did not start the next stage due to a fractured kneecap.

Gilbert won Paris-Roubaix 2019 in a two-man sprint ahead of Nils Politt , after he and Politt had been able to break away from a five-man leading group after his attack 14 kilometers from the finish.

Honors

In 2011, Philippe Gilbert was awarded the Vélo d'Or (French = Goldenes Rad) as the best driver of the year by the French magazine Vélo . In the same year he was named Belgium's cyclist of the year for the third time in a row .
