Status: end of career

David Guion (born September 30, 1967 in Le Mans ) is a former French football player and current coach . He has been the head coach of Stade Reims since May 2017 .

Player career

David Guion, born in Le Mans , came from the youth department of the Lille OSC and after a few years in the reserve team ran for the first time in the 1988/89 season for the first team to play in the top French division . The defender played regularly in this and the following 1989/90 season , but fell out of the team in the next 1990/91 season and then moved to the second division SCO Angers , where he was a regular for three years and last time in the 1993/14 season played in Division 1. In the season 1994/95 he was back in the second division at CS Sedan Ardennes under contract and the next two seasons he defended at league rivals FC Mulhouse . Between 1997 and 1999 he was active at Red Star Paris . He finally let his career end with third division club FC Istres . By the end of his career, Guion had played over 300 games in French league football.

Coaching career

After years of absence from the football business, David Guion started his first coaching job for the 2008/09 season as an assistant to Laurent Roussey at the first division club AS Saint-Étienne . Roussey was released in November 2008, and with him Guion.

In July 2010 he returned as head coach of the fifth division Chambéry SF back next to the pitch and led the club to a historic season. In the league they played the entire season for promotion and in the Coupe de France they showed impressive performances. After six rounds had been survived, they met the financially strong first division club AS Monaco in the thirty-second final , which they defeated 4-3 on penalties . In the next round Stade Brest was promoted again in penalty shoot-out from the competition and in the round of 16 they defeated FC Sochaux , where they could win the game in the regular game for the first time. In the 93-year history of the Coupe de France, he had never before succeeded in defeating three first division clubs. In the quarter-finals, the Savoyards' journey ended with a 3-0 defeat against SCO Angers. As first in the group D he rose with his club in the fourth-class Championnat de France Amateur .

For the 2011/12 season he signed with AS Cannes , but left the club independently in January 2012 after only five wins from 13 league games. He then hired as Pascal Plancque's assistant at US Boulogne , where he worked until the end of the season.

In the summer of 2012 he took over the reserve team at Stade Reims as head coach . There he worked for five years and advanced with the club up to the fourth class Championnat de France Amateur. In April 2016, he took over the first team as interim coach for the last three league games of the 2015/16 season after Olivier Guégan was dismissed. But even he could not prevent the descent of the Rouges et Blancs and then returned to the reserve. In the 2016/17 season he also took over the management of the youth department.

After Stade Reims failed to rise again in the 2016/17 season , David Guion was promoted to head coach for the 2017/18 season . He led his team with 28 wins in 38 league games to the superior championship title and was named the best coach of the season. As a newcomer, Reims established himself in the middle of the table in the next season 2018/19 and finished it in eighth place. In the next 2019/20 season , the team improved and played in the upper half of the table for the international ranks. Stade Reims benefited from the premature termination of the season due to the Covid 19 pandemic and ended it in the excellent fifth place in the table, well above their own expectations.
