The Dharmapuri district ( Tamil : தர்மபுரி மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Dharmapuri . The district of Dharmapuri has an area of ​​4,497 square kilometers and around 1.5 million inhabitants (2011 census).

The district of Dharmapuri is located in the northern interior of Tamil Nadu. Neighboring districts are Krishnagiri in the north, Tiruvannamalai in the east, Viluppuram in the southeast, Salem in the south and Chamarajanagar in the west. The latter already belongs to the neighboring state of Karnataka .

The Dharmapuri District has an area of ​​4,497 square kilometers. The district area is located in the transition area between the Tamil Nadu coastal plains and the Dekkan Plateau . The area of ​​today's Dharmapuri district has been under the influence of changing ruling dynasties throughout its history. It was last controlled by the Kingdom of Mysore before the ruler Tipu Sultan ceded the area to the British in 1792 . The British incorporated the area as part of the Salem district in the Madras province . After Indian independence in 1947, the area came to the state of Madras, which was reorganized in 1956 according to the language borders of Tamil and renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969 . Dharmapuri District was formed in 1965 from the northern parts of Salem District. In 2004, the Krishnagiri district split off from him .
