Dominique Deruddere (born June 15, 1957 in Turnhout , Flanders , Belgium ) is a Belgian actor , author and film director whose film Everyone is a star! was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film at the 2001 Academy Awards .

Life

Dominique Deruddere became interested in films and filmmaking at an early age and got his first film camera on loan from his older brother . His first as a Super 8 - cine turned fourteen film was released in 1975. He then shot several short films , such as the 16 mm film Thanked Ma (1979) and the 35 mm film Vodka Orange (1982). All of these films were made before, during and after his time at the film school . He then worked with his childhood friend Marc Dridden and wrote the script for Brussels by Night (1983) with him and also played the leading role in Istanbul (1985).

In 1986 the young director decided to film a story by Charles Bukowski . Thanks to its producer, the originally 30-minute short film became the 90-minute film Crazy Love (1987), which was distributed worldwide under the alternative title Love is a Dog from Hell . The film has won several awards and in 1987 won the Joseph Plateau Awards in the categories of best Belgian actor Josse De Pauw , best director, best Belgian film, best Belgian music ( Raymond van het Groenewoud ) and best film from Benelux , as well as another Joseph in 1990 Plateau Prize for the best Belgian film from 1965 to 1990. Deruddere also won the 1987 prize for best director at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián .

The film also caught the attention of Francis Ford Coppola , who helped Deruderre to make his next film through his Zoetrope Production Company . The film adaptation of John Fante's debut novel Wait Until Spring, Bandini from 1938 was filmed as Wait Until Spring, Bandini (1989) in the United States and also distributed worldwide. His film Everyone is a Star! (2000) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2001 Academy Awards, but was defeated by Ang Lee's Tiger and Dragon . Derudderes other films include Killing Joke (short film, 1980), A Foggy Night (short film, 1985), Suite 16 (1994), Hombres complicados (1997), Pour le plaisir (2004), Die Bluthochzeit (2005) and Firmin (2007 ).
