Jacques Dominique Wilkins (born January 12, 1960 in Paris as an American citizen) is a retired American basketball player . He was active in the NBA from 1982 to 1999 and is one of the most successful points collectors in the history of the league.

With his repertoire of spectacular dunks , Wilkins was one of the most sensational players of his time. Because of the way he played, he was nicknamed "Human Highlight Film". In 2006 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

Career

In 1982 Wilkins was elected third in the draft by the Utah Jazz , but immediately afterwards sent in a trade to the Atlanta Hawks , where he was the crowd's favorite for twelve years and in 1986 the scoring leader with an average of 30.3 points per game NBA became. Despite his individual successes, Wilkins could never reach the conference finals with the Hawks. He left the Hawks as the most successful points collector in the club's history. On average, he scored 26.4 points for the Hawks.

After he was transferred from the Hawks to the Los Angeles Clippers , his performance slowly decreased. Nevertheless, he was the top scorer of the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs in old age . But he did not reach the playoffs with either team. After a guest appearance in the Italian league, he returned to the Orlando Magic in 1998 , where he fell out of rotation after only a few games and ended his career shortly thereafter.

With a total of 26,668 points (24.8 points on average), he belongs to the elite group of 22 players who have scored more than 25,000 points in their careers. He is currently 13th in the all-time NBA points list (as of June 2019). His dunk contest duels with Michael Jordan at the end of the 80s are legendary . His greatest success here was probably winning the contest in 1985 against NBA newcomer Jordan, whereupon he won the competition two years later. Wilkins won the dunk contest a second time in 1990.

After his career ended, Wilkins held various positions with the Atlanta Hawks, including as Vice President. He also commented on games by the Hawks.
