The Drei-Seen-Land ( French Pays des Trois-Lacs ) is a region of Switzerland and includes the areas around Lake Biel , Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Murten . The region is located in the cantons of Bern , Friborg , Neuchâtel and Vaud . The area in the triangle between the lakes, the so-called Seeland , used to be very swampy. After the first correction of the Jura waters , it could be drained into the lakes via canals. It has become the largest vegetable growing area in Switzerland, especially the Grosse Moos .

language

With the three-Lakes runs the Swiss linguistic border , which in the region both German and verbally Swiss German and French are spoken. The cities of Biel / Bienne and Murten are bilingual, with the German language dominating. Neuchâtel and Vaud are French-speaking throughout. In addition, many communities that do not have the status of bilingualism also have residents of the other language.

Geography and geology

The three-lake region is part of the geographic major unit of the Swiss Central Plateau . The subsoil consists mainly of rock layers of the Molasse , which fill a basin between the Alps and the Jura mountains . These rocks are sandstones , conglomerates (Nagelfluh) and marl rocks . They are the products of the weathering of former rivers washed up during the tertiary period from the nearby mountains and deposited in a lake. That is why they are known as fresh water molasses. Under these layers are rocks from the Cretaceous , Jurassic and Triassic (here with a thin layer of salt). The crystalline basement is located at a depth of around 3000 meters.

During the Ice Age, the landscape was covered by the Rhone Glacier , which after its retreat left a glacial surface with moraine deposits . This gravel is omnipresent in the region and is of great importance for the groundwater balance and for building activities. The most recent deposits form limnic sediments that originate from periods of originally larger lake extensions. These are sands and muds as well as organic substances.

The slopes of the Jura fall steeply and with almost no upstream elevations to Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel and thus to the Three Lakes Region. It is mostly gold to light beige limestone . They limit the western flank of the Three Lakes Region. In the north and east there are further flat and slightly undulating landscapes of the Central Plateau, for example the Freiburg region.

On the slopes of the Jura mountains, limestone was quarried in various places as early as the Gallo-Roman period and transported across Lake Neuchâtel by ship. Up to the present day the economically used limestone deposits of the Jura have had a decisive influence on the architecture in the cities of the Three Lakes Region.

Culture

Swiss national exhibition

The sixth Swiss national exhibition took place in this region in 2002 with the Expo.02 . Exhibitions, the so-called «Arteplages», took place in Biel / Bienne, Murten, Neuchâtel and Yverdon. In addition, there was a ship sailing on Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel as an arteplage.

The Expo 02 contributed to making the term “Three Lakes Region” known in Switzerland.

Wine

The three-lake region is known for its wines , which thrive on the slopes of the southern Jura on Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel and on Mont Vully .

In the region there are stilt houses , which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage :
