Northeast Switzerland

The north-eastern Switzerland is a different space defined in the northeast of Switzerland . The landscape is shaped by the plains between Lake Boden and Lake Zurich and the foothills of the Alps.

  • In the cultural-historical-linguistic sense, it comprises the cantons of Schaffhausen , Thurgau , St. Gallen (majority), Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden .
  • The Federal Roads Office includes the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus , Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau and Zurich as well as the northern part of the canton Schwyz .
  • The Northeast Swiss Yodelling Association includes the two Appenzell, Glarus, Graubünden , Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Zurich and the Principality of Liechtenstein . The Northeast Swiss Wrestling Association brings together the Appenzell, Glarus, Graubünden, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau and Zurich sections.
  • The members of the former north-eastern Switzerland power plants were the cantons of Aargau , Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Zug and Zurich.
  • The greater region of Eastern Switzerland , as defined by the Federal Statistical Office , includes the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus, Graubünden, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen and Thurgau, while the cantons of Aargau, Schwyz, Zug and Zurich, according to the above definitions are partially included, do not belong to Eastern Switzerland (and thus also not to its northern part, Northeastern Switzerland).
