Correspondents' meeting 2014

Echo der Zeit is the name of one of the oldest radio programs broadcast daily in German-speaking countries. It is the evening information and background broadcast on the channels Radio SRF 1 , Radio SRF 2 Kultur , Radio SRF 4 News and Radio SRF Musikwelle from Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) and is often referred to as the flagship of German-speaking Swiss radio. The reports of the SRF correspondents are an important part of the program .

General

The Echo der Zeit was founded on September 17, 1945 and survived all renaming from Radio Beromünster to Radio DRS to Radio SRF . With the exception of public holidays, it is broadcast daily at 6 p.m. on Radio SRF 1, SRF 4 News and at 7 p.m. on SRF 2, SRF 4 News and SRF Musikwelle. The broadcast lasts around 45 minutes each, and 30 minutes on weekends. The program reaches around 700,000 listeners every day.

Echo der Zeit broadcasts can be downloaded from the Internet in MP3 format or subscribed to as a podcast . The broadcasts can also be heard individually online.

From a journalistic point of view, the program has always aimed to classify events according to their relevance beyond mere facts and immediate topicality with longer contributions, interviews and analyzes. Her well-known foreign correspondents from the pioneering days included Heiner Gautschy , Hans O. Staub , Theodor Haller , Alphons Matt and Annemarie Schwyter . Hans Lang shaped the echo of the period from 1948 to 1978 in Studio Bern. Casper Selg worked for many years as a correspondent (USA, D), moderator and editor-in-chief for Echo. After 40 years of radio and TV and many years at the Echo der Zeit, Ursula Hürzeler retired in 2015, Martin Alioth , correspondent from 1984 to 2020.

On the occasion of the broadcast's 60th birthday, Federal Councilor Moritz Leuenberger remarked in the book about the echo of time, half jokingly, half seriously:

«And when our descendants look up in the encyclopedias where the word echo comes from, they will read:" Echo comes from the famous Swiss radio program Echo der Zeit and symbolizes enlightened journalism. "

In 2016, a study by the Stifterverein Media Quality for the Echo of Time, both in terms of reporting quality ( scientific content analysis ) and quality perception (surveys), showed the best results of all the Swiss media examined. The show received the same award in 2018.

In 2018, the SRG Board of Directors decided to move the editing of Echo der Zeit from Bern to Zurich at the end of 2020. A clear majority in the National Council spoke out against it in the 2019 summer session. After the new SRF director Nathalie Wappler announced a reduction in the relocation plans, the Council of States rejected the National Council's proposals.
