Enjoy the Silence is a song by the British synth-pop band Depeche Mode from 1990. The song is one of the best-known and most commercially successful in the group's repertoire. Text and music are by Martin Gore .

Emergence

Martin L. Gore had recorded a demo version of Enjoy the Silence , on which he only accompanied himself on a harmonium . This original version was significantly slower than the later published version. Alan Wilder recognized a hit potential in the composition and created a faster, restructured version together with the producer Flood . Gore, who was not involved in this work, agreed to this new version after initial skepticism. A striking guitar riff and vocals by Dave Gahan have been added to the new version .

The original demo version was never released, but re-recorded for the first single release.

What is unusual about the conception of the song is that the title Enjoy the Silence - at least in the popular single version - is not sung. Also in the album version, the line is only after the song completely hidden is a cappella added. In contrast, the line can be found in the numerous remixes of the song, and the live version regularly ends with it.

success

Enjoy the Silence was released as a single on February 5, 1990 and was also included on the album Violator , which was released a few weeks later . The single became one of Depeche Mode's most successful singles at the time of publication. In the United States in particular , the song was extremely popular and placed in the top 10 of the US Billboard charts . In Germany , Enjoy the Silence reached number 2 on the singles charts.

Enjoy the Silence has been an integral part of Depeche Mode's live program since its release and is usually presented on stage with sweeping instrumental passages taken from the remixes.

In 2004 a new version of the song, produced by Linkin Park producer and rapper Mike Shinoda , was re-released (under the name Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted) ). This new version also made it into the top 10 worldwide.

The song's success is also expressed in a large number of cover versions . The most famous interpretations come from Tori Amos , Nada Surf , Lacuna Coil and Failure . The latter group also released the song as a single. In autumn 2011, the 19-year-old Polish singer Kacper Sikora won the Polish TV casting show “Mam Talent!” (German: 'I have talent!') By interpreting a version of the song in the finale.

Versions

Depeche Mode is generally known for the fact that the band's songs are released in numerous different versions, which usually differ significantly from each other. In addition to the 7 ″ single version and the longer 12 ″ mix ("Hands and Feet Mix"), there are also various other versions of Enjoy the Silence , including:

  • Single version - 4:15
  • Album version - 6:12
  • Hands and Feet Mix - 7:18
  • Ecstatic Dub - 5:54
  • Bass Line - 7:40
  • Harmonium - 2:41
  • Ricky Tik Tik Mix - 5:27
  • The Quad: Final Mix - 3:30 pm

The "harmonium" version largely corresponds to the original demo version, sung by Martin Gore.

In addition to these versions, various live versions were released on CD and DVD.

The Quad: Final Mix

"The Quad: Final Mix" is the longest version of a Depeche Mode song ever. The quarter-hour mix consists of four very different and self-contained parts that have been arranged and linked together by various remixers:

The experimental samples used second part of the work face V of Luc Ferrari . The instrumental string part 3 was also released separately as a remix.

B sides

For "Enjoy the Silence" Depeche Mode released two instrumental B-sides written by Martin Gore , Memphisto and Sibeling . Memphisto , a suitcase word from Memphis and Mephisto , is, according to Gore, the name of an imaginary film in which Elvis Presley plays a devil. For Sibeling , Gore was inspired by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius .

Videos

There are several videos on Enjoy the Silence . The actual video for the single shows Dave Gahan dressed as a king and with a folding chair in his hand. He wanders through a hilly landscape in Scotland, on a coast in Portugal and finally in the Swiss Alps. In between he sits down on the chair and looks into the distance. These scenes are interrupted by black and white shots of the band and a rose, the symbol of the single and the Violator album. The director Anton Corbijn was inspired for this video by the story The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry . The mix of Enjoy the Silence used in the video is slightly different from the single version; essentially it has a different intro, and Dave Gahan sings the line “Enjoy the Silence” at the end, analogous to the album version.

In the second video, shot for promotional purposes, the band plays the song on the roof of the World Trade Center .

For the remix Enjoy the Silence (Reinterpreted) published in 2004, an animated video was produced by Uwe Flade . In this one can see a large office complex in which men in black suits work at desks. A large sprout of plants pierces the floor of one of the open-plan offices and begins to spread slowly and increasingly faster. The building is evacuated by a security unit while it is being overgrown inside and out by the huge, very fast growing plant. Excerpts from Depeche Mode's concert films Devotional and One Night in Paris are shown on the monitors in the open-plan office . The plant's buds eventually bloom. In the final shot, the rose of the former record cover forms on the roof.

The British band Coldplay released a tribute to the first music video by Anton Corbijn in 2008. Instead, the video showed singer Chris Martin dressed as a king. It is the band's second music video for the single Viva la Vida . In the video for the Prince hit Alles nur stolen , one of the scenes with the wandering king from Enjoy the Silence is also re-enacted.
