They are one of the most successful Italian metal bands and have a contract with the German record company Century Media . The band's discography includes nine studio albums , one DVD and two compilations .

The band had sold over two million albums worldwide by May 2012. Her third album, Comalies, is the best-selling album in Century Media's history, with over 500,000 units sold.

history

1994–1997: The prehistory

In 1994 guitarist Marco Coti-Zelati and his friend and singer Andrea Ferro founded the band Sleep of Right . Coti-Zelati took over the bass , Raffaele Zagaria played guitar and Michelangelo played the drums . In the same year the band played their first concert in Bologna . With the song Bleeding Souls the band was featured on the sampler Noise of Bolgia .

With Claudio Leo a second guitarist was signed, while Michelangelo was replaced by Leonardo Forti. Cristina Scabbia , who is friends with the band, was hired for background vocals . Scabbia has previously appeared on many Italo Pop productions. After the band found that their vocals were a perfect match for Ferro's growls , they became a permanent member.

Even before Scabbia's entry, the band changed their name to Ethereal . In May 1996 the band recorded a demo with the songs Shallow End and Frozen Feeling and applied to various European record labels. The band turned down an offer from Nuclear Blast and signed with Century Media . With the contract under their belt , however, they found out that there is already a Greek band called Ethereal . The band then changed their name to Lacuna Coil.

1997–2001: In a Reverie and Unleashed Memories

In 1997 the band went to the Woodhouse Studio in Hagen to record the first self-titled EP . Waldemar Sorychta (Ex- Grip Inc. / Despair ), who was to become the band's regular producer, acted as producer. Already in the studio it became clear that there were big musical differences between Zagaria and Forti on the one hand and the rest of the band on the other. Despite these problems, the band recorded six songs. The two songs from the Ethereal demo were not used because, in the opinion of the band, they did not go with the new songs. The band went on tour with their label mates from Moonspell . After just three concerts, Zagaria, Leo and Forti threw in the towel and left the band. With replacement musicians, including Markus Jüllich from Crematory and Anders Iwers from Tiamat , the tour could be ended.

Just in time for the release of the EP, new musicians were recruited with Cristiano Migliore (previously Thy Nature ) and Cristiano Mozzati (previously Time Machine ). With the new line-up, the band went on tour again, this time with The Gathering and Seigmen . Due to an injury, Migliore was represented by Steve Minellig. In the summer, Lacuna Coil played for the first time at the Wacken Open Air . In October 1998 the band returned to the Woodhouse Studio to - again with Waldemar Sorychta - record their debut album In a Reverie . The song material got heavier and the album should get a lot of attention, especially in Germany and Scandinavia . In January 1999, Marco Biazzi, a second guitarist, joined the band. Tours with Skyclad , Samael and Lacrimosa followed .

After the tour was over, the band went back to the studio to record their second EP, titled Halflife . The EP contains five songs, including Senzafine, the first with Italian lyrics. In addition, a cover version was recorded for the first time with Stars , originally by the band Dub Star . Lacuna Coil played their first concerts in the UK and Ireland . In the fall of the same year, the band recorded the second studio album Unleashed Memories again in Woodhouse Studio . It contains nine new songs as well as an alternate version of Senzafine . After the album was finished, the band traveled to Mexico for two concerts in December .

Andrea Ferro 2006

Most of the year 2001 was spent on tour by the band. Lacuna Coil opened for bands as diverse as Theater of Tragedy , Dimmu Borgir , In Flames or Nevermore and performed at festivals such as the M'era Luna . For the first time the band played in the opening act of Moonspell concerts in the USA . The band also supported the newly founded Italian TV station Rock TV. Initially, the station broadcast a concert by the band, later the musicians interviewed other bands such as Blind Guardian or Dimmu Borgir.

2002-2007: Comalies and Karmacode

In September 2002 the third studio album Comalies was released, which gave the band the worldwide breakthrough in the metal scene. After the release, several tours followed. After a tour of Italy, they traveled through Europe with Sentenced . A trip through the USA with Opeth and Paradise Lost should follow. However, due to visa problems , Lacuna Coil had to cancel the tour. In autumn 2003 Lacuna Coil played a total of 76 concerts in the USA together with Type O Negative and Anthrax . During this tour the band shot a video clip for the single Heaven's a Lie . The song was then played on many American radio stations, while the music videos for Heaven's a Lie and the second single Swamped were regularly broadcast on MTV2 Headbanger's Ball (USA) and VIVA Plus (Germany).

In December 2003 a headlining tour through Europe with Moonspell, Passenger and Poisonblack followed . 2004 began with the renewal of her contract with Century Media. After another US tour with POD , the band was invited to the Ozzfest tour. Comalies was re-released as a double CD in an Ozzfest edition. A video for the single Swamped was shot on the side. The song was also used on the soundtrack for the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse . In July Comalies made it into the US album charts for the first time . With over 500,000 copies sold worldwide , Comalies is Century Media's best-selling album, and Lacuna Coil has become the most successful Italian rock band. In addition, the song Swamped can be heard in the credits of the game Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines .

Marco Coti Zelati

In 2005 the band worked on the songwriting for their fourth studio album Karmacode and also performed on the Talent Stage at the Rock am Ring / Rock im Park festivals . Due to the increased popularity of the band in the USA, the release was postponed to April 2006. The delay allowed the band to take more time during production. Century Media had previously re-released the previous albums with bonus material and new artwork, and Cristina Scabbia appeared as a guest singer on the song I'm That by Italian singer Fabio Battiato . In October 2005 Lacuna Coil headlined the Metal Female Voices Festival in Belgium and the song "Daylight Dancer" was used on the soundtrack of the film The Cave .

The first single from the album Karma Code was Our Truth decoupled. The accompanying music video was again broadcast frequently on MTV and Viva. Our Truth was used for the soundtrack of the film Underworld: Evolution . Three more singles were released, including a Depeche Mode cover version with “ Enjoy the Silence ” . Karmacode debuted at number 28 on the US charts and sold 34,000 times in the first week. In early 2006, Lacuna Coil played a North American tour with Rob Zombie . Like last year, the band performed again at Rock am Ring and Rock im Park , this time at the Alternastage. Then it went back to America for the Ozzfest tour, where Lacuna Coil played on the main stage. The next headlining tour through Europe followed in September 2006, again with Poisonblack and Lacrimas Profundere as supporting acts. For Karmacode the band was awarded a silver record for 20,000 copies sold in Italy in February 2007 .

Cristiano Mozzati

In the meantime, Cristina Scabbia appeared again as a guest singer. On the one hand, she sang a new version of the song A tout le Monde with Megadeth . She also lent her voice for the apocalyptica song SOS (Anything But Love) . The song The Ghost Women and the Hunter from the album Comalies was used for the soundtrack of the film X-Men: The Last Stand . At the end of March 2007 Lacuna Coil went on the Jägermeister Music Tour through North America together with Stone Sour and Shadows Fall . A headlining tour through North America, called The Hottest Chicks in Metal Tour, followed immediately . Only bands with female vocals served as support, namely Within Temptation , The Gathering, In This Moment , Stolen Babies and Kylesa . At the beginning of August the band performed again at the Wacken Open Air. In October 2007 Lacuna Coil played for the first time in Japan . A month later, the band Megadeth, toured Static-X , and DevilDriver by Australia . The tour ended on December 1, 2007 with a concert in their hometown of Milan.

2008–2013: Shallow Life and Dark Adrenaline

In spring 2008, the band began work on their fifth studio album and their first DVD . After the first four albums took place in the “Woodhouse Studios” in Hagen, the band broke new ground this time and chose Don Gilmore as producer. Gilmore had made a name for himself by working with Linkin Park and Avril Lavigne . The recordings took place in September and October 2008 at NRG Studios in Los Angeles . Scabbia told Rock Sound magazine that the new album Shallow Life is a concept album . All the songs deal with the subject of superficiality and dissatisfaction and the unhappiness it causes.

The DVD entitled Visual Karma: Mind, Body & Soul was released in November 2008 and contains recordings of their appearances at Wacken Open Air and the Loud Festival in Japan, both from 2007. The DVD also includes interviews with the band members and Backstage impressions. In November 2008 Lacuna Coil toured Europe as a support act for Bullet for My Valentine and played the first concerts in Russia and Estonia in December .

Acoustic concert in San Diego

In February 2009 Lacuna Coil performed at some concerts at the Australian Soundwave Festival. Then they went to North America to support Disturbed on their Music as a Weapon IV tour, together with Killswitch Engage and Chimaira . In July 2009 they followed their own headlining tour through North America, called the Spellbound Tour . Kill Hannah , Seventh Void and Dommin served as support . The tour was interrupted by the now fourth appearance at the Wacken Festival as well as a few concerts in England. After only a short break, another tour through North America followed in September 2009, this time as support for All That Remains as part of the Harddrive Live Tour .

At the beginning of 2010 Lacuna Coil toured again with their Shallow Life Tour as headliners through Europe, together with Deadlock and again Dommin. For some concerts they had to do without their bassist Marco Coti Zelati, who was paused due to a shoulder injury. This began with work on the sixth studio album Dark Adrenaline , which was recorded again with Don Gilmore. The publication originally planned for autumn 2011 has been postponed to January 2012. In January 2013, ex-guitarist Claudio Leo died of cancer, according to an interview.

2013–2017: Broken Crown Halo and Delirium

Cristina Scabbia, 2017 at RockHarz

After the band played in Vietnam for the first time in the summer of 2013 , Lacuna Coil began recording the next studio album in September of the same year. With Jay Baumgardner, the band worked with a new producer. In February 2014, the band announced that Broken Crown Halo was the last outing with the band for guitarist Cris "Pizza" Migliore and drummer Cristiano "CriZ" Mozzati. They left the band, which they had been in since 1998, to be able to focus more on their families. The new album Broken Crown Halo was released in Germany on March 31, 2014 . Mozatti was replaced by Ryan Folden, who previously helped out as a live musician.

In mid-January 2016, Marco Biazzi left the band while they were recording their eighth studio album, Delirium , which was released on May 27, 2016 , because, in his opinion, he could no longer contribute to the band. Then bassist Marco Coti Zelati took over the guitar. Several guest musicians were hired for the guitar solos. At the concerts in 2016 Daniel Sahagun and Diego "Didi" Cavallotti, who was also involved in the album Delirium , played guitar. Cavallotti is also present at the concerts in 2017. As support for the 2016/2017 European tours, u. a. Forever Still and Cellar Darling. The band performed again in 2017 at the Wacken Open Air.

Since 2018: biography and Black Anima

In November 2018, the band released their first biography under the title Nothing Stands In Our Way . At the beginning of July 2019, the band announced their ninth studio album Black Anima for October 11, 2019 and at the end of the month released their first song called Layers of Time as an audio track on YouTube.

style

Their music is based on metal sounds, accompanied by melodic guitar runs with slight influences from pop music and (since the album Karmacode ) nu metal . A special feature of the band is the double vocals, once by Cristina Scabbia and as a counterpart the male voice of Andrea Ferro. While in most bands of the genre a soprano voice meets guttural singing , Cristina Scabbia sings alto in the deep female voice .

The main influences of the band include Paradise Lost , Tiamat , Type O Negative , but also non-genre bands such as Depeche Mode . Their cover version of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" was released as a single in 2006.
