Everard Mercurian
Everard Mercurian (* 1514 in Marcourt ; † August 1, 1580 in Rome ) was the 4th general of the Societas Jesu .
Life
When the 3rd General of the Order, Francisco de Borja , died in 1572 , the General Assembly of the Order elected him 4th General of the Order on April 23, 1573. He was the preferred candidate of Pope Gregory XIII. At the end of 1573 Mercurian appointed the diplomat Antonio Possevino to be his personal secretary.
Mercurian sent the Jesuit Gregory of Valencia (1549–1603) to Bavaria in 1573 , where he worked for 25 years as one of the most important theologians of his time.
Everard Mercurian died in Rome on August 1, 1580 at the age of 66. He was succeeded by Claudio Acquaviva .
