Superior General of the Society of Jesus ( Spanish Prepósito General de la Compañía de Jesús ; Latin Præpositus Generalis ), the "general superior" ( praepositus generalis ), is the German-language title for the head of the Society of Jesus ( Societas Jesu , abbreviation : SJ ), a worldwide operating Catholic religious order, commonly known as the Jesuits . Within the Order he is called Father General . A popular nickname is "Black Pope" ( Spanish Papa negro ; Italian Papa nero ), a name that is partly derived from the color of the sober cassock that is worn by all its members (as opposed to the white robe of the Pope ) and on the authority that the superior general has over the order. The leader is elected for life by the seldom convened General Congregation of the Order, but there is the possibility of resignation. Since the 36th General Congregation in Rome in 2016 , the superior general of the Venezuelan Arturo Sosa has been . His two predecessors - Peter Hans Kolvenbach and most recently Adolfo Nicolás - had resigned.
