The Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta Speciale designed by Pininfarina was presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1969. The chassis comes from a Ferrari 312P that was badly damaged in an accident at the Monza 1000 km race in 1969 . Contrary to the twelve-cylinder engine with a displacement of 5.0 l suggested by the 512, a non-functional engine of a Ferrari 612 CanAm was installed. As a result, the car could not be driven on its own.

Sergio Pininfarina announced the creation of the vehicle that Pininfarina had actually asked Ferrari for one of the first chassis of the Ferrari 512S racing car, because they wanted to build a research body. At the time of its presentation, Ferrari and Pininfarina owned the coupe equally.

The Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta Speciale is a mid-engine coupé. Its lines are very flat and anticipate stylistic elements from later Ferrari designs. It has independent suspension and disc brakes on all wheels. In the front, between the front wheels, there is a small trunk with a front hinged flap. Above the two-seater passenger compartment, there is also a hood attached to the front as an entrance. For the most part, it consists of the windshield that extends to the engine compartment behind the seats. The rear fairing spans the wheels and the engine compartment and can be set up as a whole to the rear. The front track is 1518 mm and the rear 1511 mm. The sports car is right-hand drive. The two bucket seats in the passenger compartment are so close to each other that the gearshift lever is installed to the right of the driver.
