As a French overseas territory , the official flag of French Guiana is the flag of France . There are also flags for the department and the region.

Flag of the department and region

On January 29, 2010, the Department's General Council officially adopted its own flag, which has since been placed next to the European flag and the French tricolor . It was originally the flag of the Union des Travailleurs Guyanais ( Guyanese Workers' Union ), the largest trade union in French Guiana. She is considered one of the strongest supporters of independence from France. It was first used in September 1967 and soon became a widespread, unofficial symbol of French Guiana. The flag was officially adopted as a symbol of the UTG at the 11th Congress from November 25th to 27th, 2004. The flag is divided diagonally. The upper triangle in the flight section is green , the lower triangle on the mast side is yellow . In the middle rests a red, five-pointed star . Green symbolizes the forest, yellow the numerous soil resources. The red star stands for the “socialist orientation of the country”, but according to a commission its meaning should be transformed into the “blood in the heart of the country”. The design of the flag is similar to that of the Brazilian state of Acre .

In addition to its status as an overseas department, French Guiana is also a French region whose regional council has the right to adopt its own flag. The typical logo flag shows a yellow five-pointed star on a blue background over a green area on which an orange figure can be seen in a yellow boat that is on red water.

Unofficial flags

The coat of arms of French Guiana , which is identical to the coat of arms of the capital Cayenne , is also used as a coat of arms banner as an unofficial symbol.

On the Internet, the flag of the French Guiana independence movement is often a flag that is similar to that of the UTG. With her, however, the green and yellow fields are interchanged. The Tam-Tam Front pour la Liberation de Guiana divides the colors vertically for the flag of its movement.
