The flag of the Falkland Islands was introduced on September 29, 1948. As is customary with colonial flags of British overseas territories , she wears a Union Jack on blue cloth on the top of the mast side as a sign of solidarity with the motherland and on the outside the coat of arms of the Falkland Islands .
In 1864 Great Britain introduced a standardized flag system. In 1865 colonial governments were allowed to fly their own flags . These flags have a Union Jack at the top of the mast (see Gösch ) and a badge , the respective coat of arms, on the flying side . The government flags are blue ( Blue Ensign ) and trade flags are red ( Red Ensign ).
In 1999, a white circle under the coat of arms was removed from the flag. Two other Blue Ensign flags were in use between 1865 and 1948.
