The current St. Helena flag was introduced on October 4, 1984 and is the official flag of the island of St. Helena , an equal part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha . From 1874 to 1984 St. Helena carried a flag with a different shield.
The current flag is a variation of the Blue Ensign , which means blue with the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Liek-Obereck and the shield of Saint Helena in the center of the flying side of the flag. The shield shows a rocky coastline and a three-masted sailing ship with an English flag as well as the St. Helena plover ( Charadrius sanctaehelenae ), a native bird.
The other two parts of the British overseas territory Ascension ( flag of Ascensions ) and Tristan da Cunha ( flag of Tristan da Cunhas ) each have their own flags and coats of arms.
