Description and meaning

Like the flag of India, the flag consists of three horizontal stripes in green, white and orange, with different colors. In the middle of the white stripe, the Niger has an orange sun disk in the center.

The colors have the following meanings:

  • Orange symbolizes the Sahara desert , which can be found in the north and east of the country.
  • Green stands for hope and the grassy plains in the south and west.
  • White is a sign of the “innocence and purity of the nation”, it also expresses the good conscience of those who have done their duty to the nation.

The sun in the middle stripe shows the willingness of the people to sacrifice themselves in defense of their rights.

The unusual proportions of the flag are controversial: In the Actes du Gouvernement de la République du Niger No. 59-1 , neither proportion ( aspect ratio ) nor pane diameter is regulated.
