Description and meaning

Gabon is one of the few countries in the former French colonial area that did not adopt the pan-African colors for their flag when they gained independence. The national flag consists of a horizontal tricolor in green, yellow and blue.

Green stands for the country's forests , the wood of which makes up a major part of the economy, yellow stands for the sun or the equator that runs through the country and blue for the country as a seafaring nation.

history

From June 29, 1959 to August 9, 1960, a French colonial flag with the same color pattern as today's national flag (with stripes of different widths) and the French tricolor in the jack was in use. From 1960 to 1982 the President of Gabon used a square coat of arms banner from the country's national coat of arms . This was replaced in 1990 by the national flag, which is covered with a white disk with the national coat of arms.
