description
Green stands for the hope and agriculture of the country, yellow symbolizes mining and the belief in work as the material, moral and spiritual progress of the nation, and red is the color of charity, loyalty and love. The white star symbolizes purity and is intended to remind all citizens that they have proven themselves worthy of the independence of their nation.
The five stripes stand, comparable to five fingers on one hand, for the collective drive of the Togolese people to overcome the current obstacles. The changing colors also represent the diversity of the Togolese people who live together in unity.
It is the only national flag that uses the golden ratio in its aspect ratio .
history
During the German colonial period it was planned to introduce a separate flag for all colonies. But the idea was not implemented. Between 1956 and 1960 Togo was an autonomous republic under French suzerainty. This was symbolized with the French tricolor in the jack . The two stars in white or yellow stood for French Togo and British Togoland. In 1958 the tricolor was removed from the flag.
