Florence Pugh (born January 3, 1996 in Oxford ) is a British film actress .

Life

Florence Pugh grew up as the daughter of restaurateur Clinton Pugh and dancer Deborah Pugh, partly in Andalusia and Oxford, Spain. Her siblings are Arabella Gibbins, the actor and musician Toby Sebastian and the actress Rafaela Pugh. She attended St. Edward's School in Oxford, where such well-known actors as Sir Laurence Olivier , Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were students. During her school years there, Pugh appeared at the North Wall Theater in productions such as Romeo and Juliet , Blood Wedding , The Clearing and Into the Woods .

For the first time Pugh represented the mystery drama The Falling of Carol Morley in the role of Abbie Mortimer front of the camera, the festival made its debut in October 2014 at the London film. In William Oldroyd's directorial debut Lady Macbeth she got the lead role of Katherine. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016 , was nominated in 15 categories for the British Independent Film Award in early November 2017 , and Pugh was later named Best Actress. Annett Scheffel from the Süddeutsche Zeitung says about Pugh in the film that she plays Lady Macbeth with a wonderful ambiguity between a malicious child and an icy psychopath , and that the 21-year-old actress is a real discovery in the role of this bold youthful antihero. From the very beginning, the viewer is completely captivated by the complexity of the female main character, Scheffel continues, and it is delicious how much insolence and secret contempt Florence Pugh can put into the little word 'Sir': “She is Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina , passionate women and prisoners of the bourgeoisie. [...] And under the heavy, Victorian layers of fabric she is a modern femme fatale , daring and unscrupulous. ”In November 2017, Pugh was nominated for this role as best actress as part of the European Film Awards 2017 .

In the biopic Outlaw King by David Mackenzie , a period film about the Scottish regent Robert I , Pugh received a smaller role. In the mystery drama The Commuter by Jaume Collet-Serra , which was released in early 2018, she can be seen alongside Liam Neeson , Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson . In Fighting with My Family by Stephen Merchant , Pugh portrays wrestler Saraya-Jade Bevis .

In 2019 she starred as Amy March in Greta Gerwig's historical drama Little Women . For her dramatic performance was for the Academy Awards 2020 as Best Supporting Actress nomination.

In late June 2020, Florence Pugh became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
