British Academy Film Award / Rising Star Award
The Rising Star Award (German: "Aufgehender-Stern-Preis"; officially EE Rising Star Award since 2013 , 2011–2012 Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award , formerly Orange Rising Star Award ) is the only audience award given by the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA Awards). Sponsored in 2006 by the telecommunications company Orange , the award is presented to young international actors in memory of British casting director Mary Selway (1936–2004). It replaced the Orange Audience Award for the best film of the previous year. Such a category ( Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles or Most Outstanding Newcomer to Film ) was announced at the BAFTA Awards from 1953 to 1985 . The Orange sister company EE has been a sponsor since 2013 .
Nominee actors have generally been in the film business for several years, are between 18 and 32 years old and are known to the British film audience. The Rising Star Award should only be given to a film debutant in exceptional cases. There is no provision for honoring child actors.
Performers are proposed by BAFTA members and representatives of the film industry. The actors should have appeared in several films, at least one of which was released in the previous calendar year or before the BAFTA awards ceremony (January / February). In the past, the names were collected on a so-called "longlist" and reduced to five nominated actors by a jury in a secret ballot. The jury consists of up to 13 members each year - actors, casting directors, film producers, media representatives, BAFTA film committee members and, as a rule, last year's winner. The audience votes on the nominated actors, who are announced before the regular film award nominations, via internet voting (previously also via SMS ). The nominee with the most votes will be honored with the Rising Star Award , a specially made BAFTA mask, at the BAFTA awards ceremony .
At the award ceremony in 2011, the voting mode was changed at short notice. Eligible for nominations were actors who appeared in a feature film released in Great Britain in the previous calendar year. The jury (consisting of Tom Ford , Peter Sarsgaard , Natasha McElhone and Mike Newell , chaired by the film producer Finola Dwyer ) selected eight actors in advance, who were reduced to five nominees in an audience vote by customers of the mobile phone payment service Orange Wednesday , which was then voted on in public. In 2012 there were ten actors on the longlist.
So far, the most popular awards have been given to young British actors (seven wins), followed by their counterparts from the United States (two) and France (one win). In 2009 the German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender competed for the award.
